PA-AG: Patrick Murphy Is Running

by: DavidNYC

Wed Apr 20, 2011 at 1:15 PM EDT

Where are they now? I'll tell you where - on the campaign trail:

Former Democratic Congressman Patrick Murphy is running for Attorney General, and he's entering the race with broad support from party leaders. Former Democratic Chair T.J. Rooney, 2010 gubernatorial nominee Dan Onorato, and Congressmen Tim Holden, Jason Altmire and Chaka Fattah are endorsing his run, along with nearly a dozen state representatives and senators.

In a phone interview, Murphy said he's running because, "The people of Pennsylvania need someone to stand up for them. ... They need someone who's going protect them against criminals on the street, from big special interests who prey against our most vulnerable, including seniors, and they need an outsider to Harrisburg who will root out corruption."

"I spent my life fighting for people," he said. "In the Army I prosecuted terrorists who tried to kill American soldiers. I tried criminals who broke the law, and I taught con law at West Point." Murphy, who lost his seat to Republican Mike Fitzpatrick last year, was the first Iraq War veteran to serve in Congress.

You should click through the link and scroll down, because "yes that" Patrick Murphy's endorsement list is seriously pimp. I usually don't put a whole lot of stock in such things, but he has really wrapped up quite a chunk of the establishment right out of the gate. Former prosecutor Dan McCaffery, who unsuccessfully ran for Philly DA in 2009, is already in the race and has the backing of Rep. Bob Brady. Scranton prosecutor Kathleen Granahan Kane is also running. The election is next year.

Damn
I was hoping we'd see him in Congress again.

Follow the elections in Georgia at the 2010 Georgia Race Tracker.

I'd say it's better for him to win this office, then take on Toomey in 2016.

[ Parent ]
Based on redistricting ...
... I'm guessing the 8th only gets harder.

Look: I'm a friend of Patrick's, so anything I would say here would be completely biased. I just think it'd be great for PA to have a progressive fighter as attorney general the way NY does with Schneiderman and CA with Harris.

[ Parent ]
I was hoping for a rematch as well...
But AG will set him on a path to Governor, which is a much better launching pad for national politics (or take a run at Toomey in 2016).  In Congress you are just one of 438, and in a swingy district he didn't have a good shot to work his way up to House leadership.

[ Parent ]
Democrats have NEVER won this office
since it's been an elected position. Murphy has the clout to raise the money he needs to compete.

He's great on basically all of the issues--except for immigration. And to the degree that last ounce of latino support matters, he might have a problem.

And Democrats never won more than 55% in a Senate race
until Bob Casey did, and a Democrat only won more than 10% in a Presidential race twice until Obama did. Things can change.

[ Parent ]
Not saying it can't happen
Heck, I think Dems are favored for this office. We almost won in 2004.

[ Parent ]
the most worrisome GOP candidate ...
... if Montco DA Risa Vetri Ferman runs.

[ Parent ]
FWIW, I've never heard of him
But then, I've never lived in Montco.

Assuming a W. PA Republican, it seems like the wisest course for the Democrat is to try and dominate the NEPA airwaves. Winning the Scranton market allows some headroom elsewhere.

[ Parent ]
I thought she already passed on this
She does have an impressive pedigree, adn having 2 eastern PA pols go at it is always fun.  It would be a evry interesting race, I just don't don't know if she could flip so many Obama voters to vote for her.

Montco voted for Obama by 90K votes and also supported the Dem nominee in 2008 by a very slim margin.  PA as a whole gave Obama a 600K vote cushion but Corbett won by over 400K so I guess AG is a definite vote splitter (though I don't remebr much about the Dem nominee so maybe he was not great).

One thing is for sure, Dems need to ensure that people who show up to vote for Obama vote in the down-ticket races.  Hundreds of thousands of under-votes in teh second tier races will be all the more important in a race like these.

[ Parent ]
I'm so unfamiliar with the person
that I got the gender wrong!

Mea culpa.

[ Parent ]
LOL
I don't know much about her except in reading.  Wouldn't be able to pick her out of a lineup.  But a female AG nominee from the Philly burbs tells you msot of what you need to know electorally.

Seems she has some decent accomplishments but I honestly don't watch a lot of news so I have no idea what high profile cases she's been involved with.

[ Parent ]
it was Morganelli - a pro-life, Northampton Co. DA.
If Ferman's out, that's news to me.

[ Parent ]
She appears to be running for re-election this year
so she couldn't really announce a bid for AG until after that's taken care of.

[ Parent ]
Why do Dems never win, out of interest?
I was looking at the "party strength in Pennsylvania" page of wikipedia a while back and noticed it was the only statewide office that had never gone Dem. Why is that, can any PA experts on here tell me? I'd imagine the "Republicans are tougher on crime" perception being a big part of it, but Dems often run tough on crime and can win A.G. even in conservative states (in Mississippi, for example, AG is currently the only statewide office in Dem hands). It seems odd that Dems can win A.G. elsewhere but not in bluish-purple state like PA.

[ Parent ]
Cant answer your question but only add to the overall, wha?
When I first learned PA has never had a Dem AG, I am pretty sure there was the other fun accompanying fact that the GOP had never held the SoS office.

[ Parent ]
Huh? SoS isn't elected here. nt

[ Parent ]
I think it was Auditor
but then I checked myself (what a concept) and Auditor has been held by Dems since the 1960's save for one eight year stint by a GOPer elected in 1988.

[ Parent ]
On the flip side, Democrats have a stranglehold on the Auditor job
There's been only one Republican Auditor General in the last 50 years. Pennsylvania likes its traditions, apparently: a Republican AG, a Democratic Auditor, and alternating control of the governor's mansion every 8 years.

What do we know about the acting incumbent, William Ryan? Is he going to seek a full term?

20, CD MA-03/NH-01/MA-08

[ Parent ]
EXCELLENT!
Where can I sign up to work for him?

26, Male, Democrat, TX-26

It would be great for him to win.
When's the special election?

Ad hoc, ad loc and quid pro quo!
So little time, so much to know!

I don't think there is a special election
just a normal one in 2012.

[ Parent ]
Even if he loses, he might consider running against Toomey
PA seems to like people who have lost statewide races.  It's like hazing.  Casey lost to Rendell, Specter lost a millon times, Toomey lost to Specter...

25, Dem, Dude seeing a dude, CT-04(originally), PA-02/NY-12(now)

I totally wanna see a Sestak-Toomey rematch
What is Joe Sestak up to these days anyway?

20, Male, Democrat, CA-44 (home) CA-12 (college)

[ Parent ]
Eh
I'm fine without him. He's a horrible public speaker. I personally think a more charismatic person would have beaten Toomey (even in 2010).

21, Conservative Gay Democrat, NM-2 (Childhood) TX-10 (Home) TX-23 (School);   DKos: wwmiv.

[ Parent ]
I agree 100%
Dems tried to clear the deck for Specter, which kept out the better Dem candidates, Sestak ran anyways and beat Specter in the Primary but was a crud candidate otherwise.

[ Parent ]
Thank You
Lately I feel like everyone disagrees with me :(
It's nice having someone to back me up (even with an issue that makes me seem like a mutinous apostate).

21, Conservative Gay Democrat, NM-2 (Childhood) TX-10 (Home) TX-23 (School);   DKos: wwmiv.

[ Parent ]
Hate to break this to you, but...
...before Specter switched and we assumed we'd be running against him in November, the DSCC was recruiting Sestak as a recruit to run against him.  So Sestak was very much an attractive alternative in his own right on the DSCC's radar screen.

43, male, Indian-American, Democrat, VA-10

[ Parent ]
I've said this before, but I am still convinced
that Sestak ran a great race. I the 2010 political climate, he should have lost by something like ten points.

[ Parent ]
Yup, he did run a great race, and doesn't get the credit he deserves. (nm)

43, male, Indian-American, Democrat, VA-10

[ Parent ]
Very few people with any connection to PA politics would agree with you.

[ Parent ]
I don't think that's true, but even if it were
they would be wrong.

[ Parent ]
...
? I know that. I still think he was a horrible candidate.

21, Conservative Gay Democrat, NM-2 (Childhood) TX-10 (Home) TX-23 (School);   DKos: wwmiv.

[ Parent ]
He lost by 1% on election day
He beat Arlen Spector in the primary, looked like he was going to get SQUASHED in the general about 2 weeks before the election. THEN BAM, he comes in fast and hard.  Ultimately he only lost by 1%, whereas Onorato got railed by 9%.  That's a pretty big swing.  I love me some Sestak I'm not sure why people are saying he is a terrible campaigner, and hope to see him run in PA again at some point.

20, Male, Democrat, CA-44 (home) CA-12 (college)

[ Parent ]
excuse me, he lost by 2%
Which is still pretty good.

20, Male, Democrat, CA-44 (home) CA-12 (college)

[ Parent ]
This is great news
Sad that we probably have to concede his seat in the House but oh well.  As others have said AG is the best jumping point for higher office, though I think being governor in 2018 is more likely than Senate in 2016.

Fantastic!
I think he'll make an excellent candidate.  As to governor in 2018, I think 2014 the governor's office is going to switch to democrats, breaking the long tradition of switching every 8 years.

[ Parent ]
Not necessarily
Don't forget this:
Allison Schwartz was recruited by Steve Israel to recruit new prospects for 2012. If anyone would know where to find a good challenger to Fitzpatrick, it's Schwartz.
Bucks County has been getting bluer and bluer for the last couple decades. I think a strong candidate can beat Fitz.

Hometown: PA-8, Currently: CA-30.
Alt. Delegate to the CA DEMs from the 41st Assembly District.

[ Parent ]
Fuckyes
Glad to see Murphy moving on to bigger and better things, and I think this race is totally winnable.

Do any other states do this?
Run the Gov race one year, and then other state races midterm?

Seems totally screwy.

Yes there are more

Oregon, Indiana, North Dakota, if I remember well.

[ Parent ]
Delaware
elects the Governor and Lt. Governor in Presidential years and the other offices in midterms.

Missouri elects all their offices in Presidential years except for Auditor.

North Dakota elects the Governor, Treasurer, Auditor, Insurance Commissioner, and School Superintendent in Presidential years and the Attorney General, Secretary of State, Ag Commissioner, and Tax Commissioner in midterms. They really have way too many statewide elected offices.

Oregon elects the Governor in midterms and the rest of their offices in Presidential years.

[ Parent ]
Oh, and Indiana
Governor, Attorney General, and School Superintendent in Presidential years and Secretary of State, Treasurer, and Auditor in midterms.

[ Parent ]
It is a very good new

The redistricting process will be not favorable, then better bid for Attorney General. The office will be open in a presidential year. It is a good success in the recruitment efforts.
