Thoughts from Netroots CA, 2010 Election

(Also at Nevada Progressive, and I have photos from Netroots CA at my Twitpic!)

OK, so I've had more time to process what happened. And I had a chance to talk with my old Cali friends at Netroots California last Saturday. And I came out surprisingly hopeful about our future.

atdleft :: Thoughts from Netroots CA, 2010 Election
While we did have some rough losses in Nevada, overall the picture here was much brighter than the rest of the country. Come on, all the incumbent statewide elected Democrats are reelected while Harry Reid won by over 5.6%! Reid outperformed almost all the public polls. What happened? How come "The Great Red Tide" that destroyed many Dems in many states east of The Rockies was barely a ripple here?

Basically, it comes down to what Harry Reid and Nevada Democrats did right. They invested in getting out the vote. They made our progressive message clear and concise AND accessible to regular voters. And they reached out to minority communities and actually IMPROVED Latin@ turnout over 2006 AND 2008!

It really comes down to this. Even in "wave elections", "the wave" doesn't have to be a monstrous tsunami. Good campaigns still matter. Good field still matters. And good messaging still matters. Harry Reid made all this happen and more.

Ralston explained this on Sunday.

The Reid organization's Terminator-like single-mindedness, relentlessness and discipline turned preparation into the most satisfying victory of Reid's career, a resurrection unthinkable most of the year by the Beltway cognoscenti. Combined with an Angle campaign that was thoroughly unprepared for the post-primary onslaught - think of a Little League batter facing Roy Halladay - that by the time the GOP nominee brought in some D.C. pros, the damage was insurmountable.

Interestingly, a similar dynamic appeared in California last Tuesday. More Latin@ voters turned out than ever before. And while Jerry Brown's campaign (for CA Governor) didn't exactly "strike while the iron was hot" on delivering his message or attacking Meg Whitman's record, California unions did. And they delivered, big time!

And Barbara Boxer followed a very similar strategy to Reid's in defining Carly Fiorina early as quite the unacceptable choice, delivering a progressive message in a practical way to attract voters (Hint: Make it real. Make it tangible. Make it about one's pocketbook/wallet/purse.), and turning out Dem voters like crazy.

Again, it comes down to whether Democrats can field good candidates, deliver a good message, and turn out as many allied voters as possible. It worked in California and Nevada... But because the national Democratic groups failed in these categories and many other state parties were in turmoil, that's why the results were so bad elsewhere.

Why didn't other Senate candidates try to turn health care reform and good climate policy into winning arguments? Why didn't other state parties invest more in good GOTV infrastructure? Why didn't the DCCC and DSCC take a closer look at the winning arguments being made by Reid and Boxer?

That's the challenge moving forward. President Obama needs to rethink his messaging. Democrats need to work harder on showing how good progressive policy means more and better jobs. And Democrats nationally need to look at places like Nevada and California to learn how to rebuild good, strong GOTV infrastructure. And if Obama can turn his numbers around and offer a strong and appealing progressive message that reveals the crap the GOP is truly offering and explains how to truly get our nation back on track, he can win handily again and Democrats can soon retake the House and keep the Senate.

It really comes down to that. Oh, and I had a great time in SF... ;-)

But I'm hoping we have an even better time back in Vegas this weekend!

Awesome!
After what happened here in Texas, I want to go home to California even more badly!

Me too.
Although I probably would prefer to go to Seattle (more my style).

I LOVE Vegas!
I can't help it. I think I've always been a Vegas Showgirl at heart, so the glitz and glamour of Fabulous Las Vegas just feels like home sweet home to me. ;-)

Sometimes I really do miss Cali, but I don't know if I can handle moving back to Orange County full time.

I've never been to Vegas
though I'd like to visit sometime. I absolutely LOVE big cities by the beach, and mild weather year-round, which Texas just does not have, so if I got the chance to return to SoCal full-time, I'd be THRILLED! I am looking at returning to Cali in the near-future, though I'm looking more at NorCal for the biotech opportunities once I get my certificate.

I used to be NorCal
All the way but now I am more split between the Bay Area and SoCal. NorCal is really beautiful, does not get fires and it is more nature oriented (yeah, I'm another nature loving Californian.) I like LA now though because they have some really good restaurants, the beaches there are amazing (the beaches up in NorCal are too cold,) and there are some really nice neighborhoods down there.

Heh. I was kinda the opposite.
I used to be SoCal but more recently came to love NorCal also because of the nature, beauty, and the biotech opportunities!

Tough for me...
SF feels more "big city" with BART, the high-rises, the neighborhoods, and the crowds EVERYWHERE, but nothing can match the all-around grandeur of LA.

But again, in the end I choose neither... I've just come to love living and experiencing Las Vegas. I have the perfect blend of nature, hubbub, glitz, and glamour here.

I wish
I could clone myself and have one of me live in NorCal and one of me live in SoCal! The next best thing would be having two homes, one up north and one down south. That's my dream. The best of both worlds!

I have lived in both areas
I currently live in NorCal but I lived in Santa Barbara for a few years. I never lived in LA but when I was in Santa Barbara, I went there really often. I really loved Santa Barbara's natural beauty, it had some really nice hiking and of course the beaches were amazing! I really liked living only a few miles from them and I now have to drive an hour to get to the good beaches.

I'm still really happy in NorCal though for the reasons listed above. Also, we do not get the big heat that SoCal gets (unless you live right on the coast.)

I've also wanted a vacation house in SoCal, preferably Santa Barbara but we can't afford it.

If I could afford a vacation home...
It would probably be in Santa Barbara. It's south enough to get the perfectly pleasant Coastal SoCal weather, but north enough to have more of that "NorCal culture" of nature love, fine arts, and fabulous food & wine. I'm hoping to head back there next spring to taste my way through Wine Country again! (Btw, when I'm not talking politics, I'm a HUGE foodie!)

Here are some suggestions on what to do there
The Downtown has alot of shopping opportunities. Alot has probably changed since I lived there though. As for restaurants, there is a nice restaurant named Emilios near East Beach and a place called Pescucchis. My favorite restaurant though was Via Vai which is in Montecito.

As for the beaches, East Beach was always too crowded for my taste so I went to Hendry's Beach which was always quieter and has some really nice tidepools in the low tide.

I also went back and checked the precinct results for my old neighborhood there and it actually went for Obama. I was suprised because it seemed pretty conservative (we had very religious neighbors.)

I almost lived
In Las Vegas when I was younger but my family decided to go to NorCal instead. Yes, I definitely agree SF seems big city with all of the density, BART and all the tourists at Pier 39. I have alot of SF friends who love it there because they are close to everything but I really prefer the communities north and south of SF. They are less crowded, more quiet, close to nature but they are still close to many stores and restaurants.

I LOVE visiting SF...
But honestly, I don't know if I could handle living there full time. It's nice to have some open space, which is why I enjoy living in my 'hood in Henderson (southeast Vegas suburbs). We have plenty of parks and trails here, so I feel like I have more room to roam here than at my aunt's SF apartment. (It's in a great location south of Pacific Heights, but it's quite a bit of a walk just to get to Golden Gate Park or Alamo Square.)

I'm also a desert lover, so waking up to the beauty of The Mojave always puts a smile on my face.

Except the wild temperature swings
I like deserts too. I enjoyed waking up to the desert sunrise when I lived in Arizona. I plan to return there for a little bit to get back on my feet financially before I return to Cali.

My experiences with the desert
Were with a school trip to the desert. We went in late May and drove around Mojave National Preserve. It was really hot and really fun but later in the trip, we actually got a few drops of rain.

The desert is ALWAYS...
Unpredictable, especially with our weather!

One minute the sun could be shining, the next a cloud appears, and then the next we have a flash flood! That's just part of the wonder of The Mojave for me.

And right now, the weather is great. We'll have plenty of sunshine and high 60s during the day & mid 40s at night this weekend. Picture perfect. :-)

On a side note
My Grandmother lived in Henderson for a few years. I don't remember exactly which part though.

If you are in SF and want the open space though,  I highly recommend driving about 15-30 minutes north to the Marin Headlands and Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County across the Golden Gate Bridge. There are some really nice trails on Mt. Tam but if you really hate crowds, avoid Muir Woods. The crowds are down though there on the weekends and in the winter.

I hope NV-Sen in 2012 is a great chance for a pickup.
If Berkley goes up against Heller (this is hypothetical), what do you think could happen?  Is Heller a good campaigner?

Ad hoc, ad loc and quid pro quo!
So little time, so much to know!

On Heller
He had a close race in 2006 which was a Democratic year but the district barely voted for McCain. Washoe County's margins counterbalanced the cow counties. I am worried that a Berkley/Heller race will be similar to 2006's map with a Las Vegas Democrat vs. an Upstate Republican. Reid's turnout operation was not in full swing that year though because of Ensign and the non agression pact. If Ensign is gone, the non agression pact will be too so Reid will be able to help Berkely who does not have his high negatives.

Also, I am a fan of Berkley too because I know someone who knew her and liked her alot.

Berkley is part of Team Reid...
He volunteered on his very first campaign, for State Assembly in 1968 (!!!). Shelley and Harry are super close, so I have a feeling he'll be more than happy to help her. (Jack Carter was pretty much seen as a walking, talking joke buy Team Reid in 2006, and b/c of the nonaggression pact with Ensign, they just let Carter crash and burn on his own.) Since Ensign is pretty much seen as dead meat one way or another (I know, I know, PPP doesn't think so, but they don't realize the big Nevada power players are abandoning him in droves!), Shelley's only obstacle is Dean Heller... And more specifically, whether Heller can win the GOP primary. (He looks strong now, but then again so did Sue Lowden at this time last year... We remember how this last GOP primary ended.)

Your wish may be their command...
From what I've heard, Angle has no intention of going away. I really thought this would be her last hurrah, but she seems determined to lose even more races for the NV GOP! If she runs in NV-02 again and wins the primary, that could suddenly make it a possible Dem pickup in 2012. And if she runs for NV-Sen again and wins the primary, that would definitely make Shelley Berkley the favorite to win.
