AZ-Gov: Brewer Runs Away From Debates

by: James L.

Check out this naked shit:

Incumbent Republican Jan Brewer said Thursday she has no intention of participating in any more events with Democrat Terry Goddard. She said the only reason she debated him on Wednesday is she had to to qualify for more than $1.7 million in public funds for her campaign.

I hope that $1.7 million was worth the embarrassment of her disastrous pre- and post-debate performance, in which she stumbled out of the gate during her opening statement and angrily stormed away from a media scrum after refusing to answer a chorus of questions on her bizarre, unsubstantiated claims about "beheadings in the desert". And by the way, she's still not explaining herself on that score:

"All you guys were doing and talking were beheadings, beheadings, beheadings," the governor said. "That is something that has stuck with you all for so long, and I just felt we needed to move on."

You gotta give Brewer points for honesty; she fully admits that she's ducking out of all future debates because she knows she'll lose:

Anyway, Brewer said, she believes the debates help Goddard more than they benefit her.

"Why would I want to give Terry a chance to redefine himself?" she said.

At least we know where her head's at!

Smart for her
control the damage and keep demonizing immigrants. Shame, this race was so promising before SB 1070 made Brewer into "the only thing stop the illegals from taking over Arizona....besides John McCain."

She's up there
with worst ever.  Her, Palin, Bachmann, and Angle all need to be exiled for our country's own good.

Well, maybe not ever, but current
Plenty of other whackos to go around.

And
Steve King (IA), Buck, Miller and Perry..

don't forget about the male republican assholes..

There's a poll at that link.
The poll shows 92% in support of more debates.

Ad hoc, ad loc and quid pro quo!
So little time, so much to know!

Yes, I did go vote in that poll, thank you
Because I do believe there should be more debates, at your suggestion I followed the link and cast my vote.

[ Parent ]
how much crazier does she have to be before
people say, "yeah i like SB 1080 (or whatever the number is) but wow, that's not enough to justify voting for her.  yeesh!"

Top ten signs you're an SSPer #1: your favorite song is "Panic At Tedisco" and no one understands what you mean.

What a buffoon...
Why, oh why, Arizona, would you want this crazy lady as your Governor any longer? And if you really do, would you like to help us next door by taking this crazy lady, too?

Yes, Virginia, there ARE progressives in Nevada!

Well, at least she'll never run for president
Still think this is a very steep climb for Goddard, though.

Jan Brewer for Governor.
Because doing the bare minimum is what made this country great.

Morals of the story
#1 - Is that no politican has any excuse for totally flubbing their opening statement that bad. This wasn't a question about physics. This was to say why people should vote for you. Based on that why should they?

#2 - You don't make stuff up that is totally untrue and walk away from it. Politicians always stretch the truth or embellish the facts but we are basically talking about not having any basis for what you are saying and then walking away from it. At least say that you were mistaken. Even if she said that the headless bodies were in Mexico and that she misimplied that they were in Arizona people would live with that.

Lesson #1
1.  Never admit you're wrong.  It shows weakness.

Some people live by different lessons.  I know many people who have never been wrong in their life in their own minds.  Some people like that mindset, some dont.  Seems AZ does.

Brewer wins unless something real bad about her comes out...there's pretty much nothing she could actually say that could hurt her.

I want the Goddard campaign to capitalize on this.
How about an ad about "Is this the person we want governing our state?"

and another one about "Jan Brewer doesn't understand law enforcement in Arizona".

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

LOL
Well the first answer is a definitve YES so I don't know how Goddar would benefit.  She's governor and has beein in the media more than just baout everyo other governor nationally.  She's ahead by 20 points because they do want her.

On question 2, people do not want law enforcement per the books.  They are voting to selectively apply laws and also voting to create new laws to serve personal agendas, not protect/promote public safety.

She's not an unknown entity....

If anything, you should want Goddard to spend his entire campaign budget on private detectives and try to dig up dirt...maybe an illegal was her nanny back in the day.  Quite simply, there is not Goddard path to victory without something coming out from her past, because in AZ right now her words are helping her, not hurting her.

[ Parent ]
Are you seriously saying that her presenting 10 minutes of dead silence on air
is helping her?

Or refusing to answer reporter's questions about something she's said?

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

[ Parent ]
Seconds.
10 seconds.  Had it been 10 minutes.............

[ Parent ]
She's trying to cut it while she's still ahead.
Someone stick the cut and run meme on her.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

Are there any other candidates?
If so, Goddard could go debate them.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

That would hurt Goddard
Just gives 3rd parties more exposure.  Its unlikely there's a more right wing person out there that could siphon votes from Brewer.

Maybe one that supports SB 1070
but doesn't support any tax increases at all, including May's Prop 100.

So, I'm actually watching this thing on a CSPAN repeat right now...
Besides her opening statement, Jan Brewer's performance really isn't THAT awful. Granted, I don't agree with her on a lot, and I think Terry Goddard is infinitely more appealing, but this is hardly an all-around dreadful turn.

Did you watch
Her post-debate interview? Or virtual lack thereof?

[ Parent ]
Unfortunately for her
political debates tend to be so uneventful that the media will latch on to the one gaffe in the debate. Remember McCain's "that one" remark from the town hall debate in 2008? Now, remember anything else from that debate being played over and over?

[ Parent ]
This won't be a 20 point race for long
Goddard will be within single digits within one week.

This chick nearly got her ass handed to her in the primary before she demogogued immigrants into a big lead.

Her opening statement is one strike, the headless statement is another, to decline to step back from the headless statement is the third.  To decline any more debates is yet another strike against her.

If this race doesn't tighten up after all that, then Arizonians was certified dip-shits.

I just can't imagine this
Look, I'm no fan of the Arizona law, but, evidently, Arizonans are, and Jan Brewer supports their view. Terry Goddard will bring the Dems home, but that's hardly enough in this sort of cycle.

My guess is this race, post-debate, looks like...

GOP - 41%
Democrat - 30%
Independent - 29%

Brewer - 95/15/56 = 60%
Goddard - 5/85/44 = 40%

Which, if I'm not mistaken, has looked like my projection all-along. And, look - I'm no shill for Brewer. I'd vote Goddard in a heartbeat. Realistically, I just don't see this thing narrowing much.

I
will admit that the debate alone is not going to kill her but the debates could be a sign of her being a horrible campaigner. Campaigns matter and if she runs an awful one then I could see it narrowing. Probably not to the point that Goddard wins but closer than twenty points.

I empathize with Brewer on this one
while I hope she loses, I'm a stutterer.

I've found that pauses such as that help me control my stuttering.

Public speaking is a hard thing
Of course, public speaking is a major part of her job.

But I wonder if you still have empathy for her after watching her post-primary press scrum -- because, jeez, there's no way you can have sympathy for that.

[ Parent ]
Panic does strange things to people
Of course, panic is not a desirable characteristic for anyone in public office, especially in a leadership position.

I was able to teach my first course (local CC) this spring. It was an excellent experience to manage it without any serious stuttering fits.
