OH-16: AFSCME Drops $750K Against Renacci

by: James L.

Wed Aug 11, 2010 at 5:47 PM EDT

Via Greg Giroux, AFSCME is up with a new ad today hitting Republican hopeful Jim Renacci, who is challenging first-term Dem Rep. John Boccieri, on the issue of Renacci's support for a 23% sales tax:

And we definitely have some word on the size of the buy:

AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE COUNTY AN - C90011172

  1. Opposes Candidate: James B Renacci (H0OH16097)
Office Sought: House of Representatives, Ohio District 16
       Payee: Adelstein/Liston
       Date Expended = 08/09/2010      Amount Expended = $750000.00
Purpose: TV ads Totally Unacceptable Deadbeat

That's a monstrously huge buy for this time of year, and there's no word on whether that money is being spread out over multiple weeks or multiple ads. Boccieri is pretty high on the list of vulnerable Ohio Dems this cycle, so it's nice to see AFSCME try to get out and define Renacci before he can define himself.

Renacci has a ton of money
So he may be able to hit back. The problem with this is the people aren't told it will be replacing the income tax, not in addition to the income tax.

WOW
I'll have to look out for this one, I'm in OH-13, not even 5 miles from OH-16, so it'll probably run in my hometown.  I'll be sure to give updates on saturation and duration of the ad.  This is great news for Boccieri, who's a valuable democrat and a rising star in the Ohio Democratic Party.  I feel he could be safe for the forseeable future if he survives this year.

I hope some of the spend...
...is for after Labor Day.  Otherwise its just another confounding August ad blitz.

As for the replacement of the income tax, it won't matter much as a response.  If Dems proposed we raised the  income taxed but outlawed sales taxes, I'm pretty sure Republicans would accuse Dems of "raising taxes", even if it was set up to be revenue neutral.

Support for sales tax only is also very hard to do...23% is alot when most people pay at most 8-9%.  A lot of people don't pay 15% on their income so it would be an increase on people who spend what they make each week.

Let's steer this away
from the merits of various tax schemes.

But I think we can all agree on this: Politics ain't beanbag.

Politics ain't beanbag
I had no idea what this means.

So as always I went to Urbandictionary and I won't go into details about what it said, but suffice it to say according to their first 3 definition you initially sounded like a (sexual) deviant.  Then I got to the 4th definition and it all made sense:

"Figuratively meaning light, easy, care-free play. Derived from pillow-fight-like play with beanbags. Mostly used to indicate the opposite. i.e. "ain't beanbag" means rough, cut-throat play - especially in competition. This is used by a more mature audience"

LOL

I also wonder
Would this replace the SS/Meidcare taxes as well?

[ Parent ]
As I mentioned
with the NM-02 Defenders of Wildlife ad, since when have political ads been completely truthful? I still found it bizarre that someone was like, sorry, this ad uses some sneaky wording, we can't show it. like, that's 95% of ads...

Agreed
This is a bizarre ruling...or if the LCV surrendered voluntarily, a gigantically stupid blunder.

"fair tax" is toxic for Republicans
everywhere in the country. This is a great line of attack.

Where is Steve Forbes anyways?

[ Parent ]
It didn't work for Jim Martin
A lot of people I know say that the "Fair Tax" ad the DSCC ad put out in 2008 really stop the momentum Jim Martin was gaining towards election day and stopped him from getting 50% because it riled up the people who support that in GA which is a pretty large group of John Linder/ Neal Boortz disciples.

I think if defined properly it could be a winning issue in GA (worked for Barrow in 2004 against Max Burns who supported it) but it's risky to go to battle against the dedicated people who support it unless you're willing to go all in to define it as a net negative for the middle class.

[ Parent ]
It also
Didn't work for Paul Carmouche.

[ Parent ]
Alan Grayson wouldn't be in Congress
if it weren't for his hard hitting fair tax adds last cycle.

[ Parent ]
It's pretty good
But it really is only a tiny step-up from "they want to pull the plug on grandma."  And only a tiny step because there is actual fact involved with the attack.

And it's about fucking time some apparatus of the Democratic Party impressed me messaging wise!!!  This is killer, absolutely killer.

IEs make a mockery of fundraising quarters
A good fundraising quarter for a vulnerable Democratic House incumbent is about $600k.  Markey and Perriello both garnered headlines when they had quarters that big.  But one union can drop more than that on one congressman just for one ad. It makes me feel like the inside game -- relations among incumbents, state parties, unions, and single-issue group leaders -- is more important than the transparent, outside game of raising money from traditional supporters in-district, and from the Democratic base out-district.

I'd like to get a better sense someday of what percent of total campaign spending (in the House, say) is by candidates, and what percent is IEs.  I wouldn't be surprised if it was 60% IEs at this point.

I guess that's fine, it just means that I had forgotten or failed to realize how much power is concentrated in the single-issue groups and corporate 527s, as opposed to out in the districts themselves.

Im glad I follow SSP
because I would never know about the massive amounts of money our own interest groups spend on us.

Now...
what's with loyal Democrat Jon Bon Jovi giving $1,000 to Renacci???

That is so distressing.
What the hell!

[ Parent ]
Oh, I see.
Ashland Times-Gazette article

One of Renacci's most visible donations came from rock star Jon Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi donated $1,000 under his real name, John Bongiovi. James Slepian, Renacci's campaign manager, said the two formed a friendship through the Arena Football League, where Bon Jovi was a majority owner of the Philadelphia Soul franchise and Renacci was an owner of the Columbus Destroyers franchise.

OK, they actually knew each other.  That makes sense.

Like my former college roommate, a staunch Republican from Bakersfield, CA.  He currently works for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R, CA-22), and if he ever chose to run for office, unless he had swallowed the Kool-Aid completely, I'd send him some money.

[ Parent ]
I had one friend who wanted to run for St Paul city council
which is non-partisan, and she is a Republican.  Then she told I spit in the face of our soldiers over a position of mine.  She lost my pity $15 bucks.  And she did  it all to impress a guy that she liked, deplorable.

[ Parent ]
Its OK
He gave it to the primary campaign, so it has likely already been spent. I guess now would be a good time for this question to: If a candidate has money left over in their primary account, can it be transferred to their general election account?

Arena football
Bon Jovi and Renacci both own an arena football team.  George Karl, the Nuggets coach also gave him money.

Please donate to amcharities.org to help build more after school centers in the Miami area.

Just wondering, but is OH-16 heavily Italian?
Boccieri and Renacci both have hardcore Italian names, which I would think is strange for a Midwestern district (Or and district outside of the Northeast, for that matter).

16, Male, MI-01

According to the census, it's about 9% Italian-American
the largest ethnic ancestry group is German, at 34%. Which would make sense, as it's close to the border with Pennsylvania.

[ Parent ]
Cool map here
Largest ethnicity by county, sky blue is German, which dominates most of the heartland.

Amish
This district covers about 2/3 of the largest Amish population in the country (Wayne-Holmes-Stark Counties has more Amish than Lancaster PA).

Until 2004, the Amish didn't vote, but Karl Rove launched a campaign to register them to vote for Bush that year. Not sure if they've become "likely voters" in the ensuing years.

Saturation
I've seen this ad twice and I don't watch alot of live, local broadcasting, so it is definitely getting out there.

The ad is mildly annoying, but its man on the street style is much more effective than the corny anti-Strickland ads featuring actors that have been blanketing the airwaves all summer. Then again, looking at Stricklands recent polling, maybe they're more effective than I thought.

Rena-see
Not Rena-chee. Who knew?

Americans suck at pronunciation
the proper Italian pronunciation is with a "ch" sound though.

This is really an unfair ad
The tax would replace income taxes not be in addition to them.

But hey, I've seen worse than this.

Politics ain't beanbag.

[ Parent ]
I'll be sure to bring that up every time a Republican ad twists the facts
