SSP Daily Digest: 7/19 (Morning Edition)

  • IL-Sen: Undoubtedly Alexi Giannoulias wishes this kind of thing happened every week: Barack Obama is coming to town for a fundraiser on August 5th.
  • PA-Sen: The Philly Inquirer has a good look at Pat Toomey's attempted "moderate" makeover. He's doing a fundraiser with Susan Collins, who was lambasted last year by the Club for Growth - Toomey's old group - as "Comrade of the Month" for her stimulus vote. He's also getting the support of a former Specter chief-of-staff (who "stayed loyal" to his old boss when he became a Dem), and perhaps most famously, came out in favor of Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation to the SCOTUS. The real question is, will this stick? Or will Joe Sestak be able to show Toomey for the ultra-conservative he really is?
  • WV-Sen: This is unexpected: The West Virginia legislature, called into a special session specifically for the purpose of amending the state's elections laws, recessed yesterday without taking any action. Apparently, the two houses are still ironing out differences. (Remind me why we need bicameral state legislatures?) The Secretary of State's office says that it thinks it has time to hold a special election this fall if a bill passes today, but that timetable may be in doubt if lawmakers tarry any longer. Gov. Joe Manchin could also rely on a state AG opinion and schedule a special even if the lege fails to act - but he might also do nothing, meaning Carte Goodwin could serve past November.
  • AL-Gov: Artur Davis is determined to be remembered as the Asshole of Alabama. Despite endorsing Ron Sparks in his concession speech, Artur Douchebag spewed a bunch of right-wang talking points about his former opponent - and also went out of his way to praise Republican candidate Robert Bentley. Ooh, ArturD2, I definitely see some phat lobbying jobs in your future - and maybe a seat on a deficit commission some day. Stay douchey!
  • MN-Gov: GOP nominee Tom Emmer really stepped in some serious shit when he suggested that the minimum wage should be revoked for waiters in Minnesota - and that he had heard of servers making over $100,000 a year. So to make reparations, he held... I guess, not a town hall but a dining hall hall with restaurant workers, who were mostly annoyed by his refusal to get specific. (Said one: "I didn't know of him before this. I know him now. And I don't like him.") But it all came to an abrupt end when activist Nick Espinosa dumped a couple thousand pennies on Emmer's table, barking "Here's your tip!"
  • NY-01: Stay nasty, boys. Randy Altschuler is sending out mailers attacking rival Chris Cox for his support of Dede Scozzafava and Charlie Crist.
  • NY State Sen: You may remember Pedro Espada as the "Democrat" who spearheaded last year's attempted coup by Republicans in the state Senate. In addition to being a scumbag under federal investigation, he's also been targeted by the Working Families Party, who say that his defeat in the September primary is their "No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 priority." To that end, they've been aiding Jose Gustavo River, a former aide to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. On top of that, Bill Samuels, a bigtime Dem donor, is pledging to spend $250K to boot Espada. Let's hope it happens!

    AL-Gov
did someone forget to tell Artur Davis that the primary is over and he can stop kissing the asses of conservative Republicans who wouldn't vote for him anyway?

    No kidding. What a maroon.

Color him bitter. That's what it really is. And he's not running for office again, so...
    ...he doesn't care.

But this just goes to show he is not and never really was a good Democrat.  He was always in politics only for himself.

    Bonus points to DavidNYC
for calling him "Artur D2".  I thought of that a while back and hadn't heard anyone use it. That was sort of a memory peg for me to keep track of the weird spelling of his first name.

I hope that his successor will be a better Representative for the district. It is most likely that he will stay in DC for a lucrative lobbying gig...

    NY St. Sen
Bill Samuels is not just a "bigtime Dem donor."He is also a former Lieutenant Governor candidate (dropped out in June) and founder of the New Roosevelt Initiative, a progressive reform organization which, among other things, is focused on redistricting laws, ethics reform, campaign finance reform, and (weirdly) changing the Democratic symbol from a donkey to a Tiger.

    Tiger was Tammany Hall's symbol
As for Espanda remeber the guy he beat to win his Senate seat is sitting in Federal prison right now on corruption charges.

Espanda is really the disgrace of the Democrats in the NYS Senate. They are the ones who gave him his power. Instead of realizing the Senate was basically evenly divided and set up some power sharing agreement with the GOP they tried to steamroll them by relying on Pedro Espada and his amigos votes.

They are reaping what they sow. If you ask me all the crooked Senators running the Dem caucus needs to go. Espanda, Kruger, Wilson and Sampson are all a disgrace.

thanks to the Working Families Party

I wish Espada loses this year. He play like J Lieberman in the NY state senate.

Without Pedro Espada the democratic caucus in the state senate would improve a lot.

    [ Parent ]
His betrayal was very arguably much worse than Lieberman's
because he actually defected to the other side to help the Republicans regain a majority in the New York State Senate for a time. Plus, he's a corrupt asshole. I would describe Lieberman as a person of immoral character who won his first Senatorial election by assassinating the character of Lowell Weicker, and he's done a lot of things that certainly appear to be in the interests of big contributors or his wife's employer, but he isn't personally corrupt in such a way as to draw an investigation by an Attorney General.

    Give Lieberman time
I'm convinced he is salivating over the prospect of the GOP winning enough seats in November to make his vote for control pivotal.

    [ Parent ]
    Espada is scum
but I'm afraid he could sneak through anyway. Hopefully the Bronx doesn't have a large Arrancar vote.

    Funny Clip
of Mamma Grizzly's favored candidate in Alaska. If this guy won the primary by some fluke would we be competitive at all?

    http://politicalwire.com/archi...

Proud member of the Indiana Democratic Party from IN-9.

Unfortunately, no one is polling Alaska at all because of cost
So we have no idea. Scott McAdams could theoretically be competitive against Miller, but no one knows for sure.

    Alaska
is also a very weird state to poll.

I don't see any Democrat as competitive in Alaska this year
Regardless of who wins the Republican primary.

    [ Parent ]
    Why not?
We won there in 2008. Why not this year? Obviously Begich is a superior candidate than McAdams, 2008 was a better year, and Stevens was caught up in corruption charges, so it's a different situation. But Stevens was also probably a better campaigner and fund raiser than Miller with better name rec and he also had Palin on the top of the ticket helping him out. And regardless, it showed that it's still possible for a Democrat to win statewide.

It would be an uphill battle for sure. But I don't see why we should automatically write it off in the absence of polling

Some Dude, 19, Democrat, NH-02 (residence), MA-08 (college)

    [ Parent ]
Why would it be more expensive to poll Alaska
    than anywhere else?

Day before the Georgia primary and I still haven't made up my mind.
I've never been in this position before.

Follow the elections in Georgia at the 2010 Georgia Race Tracker.

    AR-Sen/Gov: Boozman up 25, Beebe up 9
    Beebe only up 9?
Not sure how reliable that is and what it means for Blanche. Though clearly Boozman is up at least double-digits and likely to win.

    [ Parent ]
    I
have trouble believing that as well. Even Rasmussen shows us doing a lot better than that. I can see Blanche losing by 25 points but I doubt the Governors race is that close. Is the pollster reputable?

It's plausible to me, Arkansas might be the most anti-Obama state in the nation......
Remember this is a state where Obama couldn't crack 40%.  And the hostility against him from the start was driven in no small part from his beating their favorite daughter, Hillary.  That was going to produce resentment from the state's white Democratic rank-and-file, not just from Republicans and conservative independents.

And of course there is racism, and the state's voters' growing alignment of their conservative ideology with the appropriate political party, too, but those things don't distinguish Arkansas from the rest of the Old South.

All 3 of those things combine to make Arkansas tough, and the Hillary factor makes it tougher for Democrats here than perhaps anywhere else.

I bet if Hillary were President right now, all other things being equal, we'd be looking at Lincoln comfortably-but-not-safely leading Gilbert Baker right now.  And I say that as a strong and consistent Obama supporter going back to summer 2007, having no resentment but just saying matter-of-factly.

    [ Parent ]
    Lincoln yes
But Beebe? Even Rasmussen had him leading Keet 57-33 on June 15.

    [ Parent ]
    Theoretically
if Lincoln loses by lets say a 30-40 point margin in November, she could drag a ton of Democrats including Beebe down with her.

It's common for a presidential candidate
to underperform in the home state of their primary opponent. The same phenomenon can be seen in the weak 2008 showings by McCain in Utah and Idaho--Mormon country.

    [ Parent ]
    Um, no, no comparison......
Nothing, not McCain-Romney or any other presidential primary battle in my lifetime, compares to the intensity and bitterness of Obama-Clinton.

Hillary was the President's wife for 8 years and only 8 years earlier, and before that the Arkansas Governor's wife for a decade straight.  That was 18 straight years in the Arkansas spotlight, and afterward she was a national figure and U.S. Senator.

And Obama is black and beat her!

There's just no comparison at all.  It's not just about the Arkansas presidential primary, it goes way beyond that.

    43, male, Indian-American, Democrat, VA-10

    [ Parent ]
    True
The Obama-Clinton battle brought to the forefront literally dozens of factional differences that have been underlying Democratic Party politics for decades. Something like that has far-reaching consequences, particularly in a candidate's home state.

Does Ayotte really want to associate with Palin?
New Hampshire isn't exactly your typical Republican evangelical populist state, and I really don't think Sarah is that popular up here. I guess it could help her with fund raising and with Republicans, but a lot of Independents vote in the primary anyway. I don't know, maybe I'm just underestimating the level of anti-Obama fervor in the country.
