NY-Gov: End of the Line for Steve Levy as GOP Nominates Lazio

by: James L.

After the first round of voting at the New York Republican convention, this was the scene:

Nearly 60 percent of the GOP faithful gathered at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers voted to make Lazio their standard-bearer in the race against Democrat Andrew Cuomo in November. Levy, the Suffolk County executive favored by party Chairman Ed Cox, came in second with 28 percent of the vote.

Buffalo developer Carl Paladino, who has pledged to petition his way onto the ballot, got eight percent. Westchester businessman M. Meyers Mermel, a late entry into the race, received four percent.

A subsequent vote was held on the question of allowing Levy, who is still a Democrat, onto the Republican primary ballot. Levy failed:

The vote on a GOP primary for Levy: yes 42.6 percent, no 57 percent. Levy is done

Stick a fork in him. There is no way for Levy to make his way onto the Republican ballot now, as his Democratic registration necessitated a majority vote approval at the Republican convention to make that happen.

It's always nice to see another party switcher fall flat on his face.

UPDATE: It's also the end of the line for M. Myers Mermel, who'd just gotten into the race last week. Having abandoned a potentially-promising Lt. Gov. bid in order to finish deep in fourth place in the Governor balloting, he threw his backing to Lazio, and also chastised Paladino for his plans to try to petition onto the ballot.

Why?
If you are Steve Levy why bother doing this? I mean this now makes him a pariah in most, if not all, of the parties in NY. Even if he won he would have had the honor of being the guy who lost to Cuomo by 20 plus points.

Would have raised his statewide profile
and allowed him to run for something more attainable next time, perhaps?  Maybe a Senate run in 2012?

Or maybe, just maybe, someone was able to convince him Cuomo wasn't ultimately going to run.

I see nothing smart in Levy's bid

All seems wrong, a big mistake.

Levy burn his political career very fast, like P Griffith.

He still can run for reelection as democrat, but sure will have primaries.

He thought he had a better chance
His heart was set on running for Gov. He thought he had a better chance of being elected as a Republican than beating Cuomo in a primary.

What's next for Levy?
He will continue to be the Suffolk executive for the remainder of his term. What happens after that?

More importantly, what is Cox's next gambit?

He's still County Ex
I dont think this will hurt him all that much in Suffolk County. He is still quite popular there and was always viewed as an anti-machine pol.

I dont think this changes things that much. He wanted to run for Gov but saw his path to the Dem nod blocked by Cuomo. He didnt want to suffer the same fate as Tom Souzzi (to get blown out by a popular AG only to lose re-election later) did so he jump parties with the promise from Ed Cox to clear the field from him.

I think if Levy runs for re-election with the GOP line instead of the Dem I probably is a net plus for him. He'll still win a good chuck of the Dem vote there plus lock of the GOP as well.

That didnt happened.

Cox?
Hopefully a resignation. He almost makes Michael Steele look competent. I can not stand him, and the Republican PArty will continue to be irrelevant in NY until he is gone. I would NOT be surprised to see Conservatives make a play to be the 2nd major party in NY this year, trying to get more votes for Rick Lazio on their line. I think that would still be better than having Cox as NY GOP chair, Long is more competent, even though he screws the GOP sometimes.

Bad year for party switchers
Levy waited too long to jump into the race. He allowed Lazio to build up his support. You can't switch parties a few months before the primary/convention and think you're going to be welcomed with open arms by the rank and file when you've been a member of the opposition for an extended period of time. It's too nakedly opportunistic. Outgoing Congressman Parker Griffith is a perfect example of this.

So true
Keep in mind, Lazio jumped into the race even as Giuliani was supposedly still mulling it over.

Levy's bid is not smart.

Rick Lazio is not a some dude. A former congressman and senate nominee for an open seat is not the easier adversary for jump to the primary of other party. Cuomo was crushing Lazio but this was not by Lazio own weakness, this is by Cuomo's strength. He was leading big over Giuliani and he was crushing Pataki in some poll. And Levy see not that.

And true this is bad year for party switchers. I wish the same luck for T Salmon (VT) in the general.

He probably would have needed to switch a few years before running
Specter was a Democrat for a full year, for all the good that did.  If Levy had switched in 2006, won reelection in 2007 as a Republican, and started running in 2009 for Gov he'd at least have a history and an electoral record as a Republican.

Mermel perplexes me
If he wanted a higher-profile race, why didn't he switch to the Senate race, where he would do pretty good in the primary (and convention) and probably have the best shot at Gillibrand?
