CA-Gov, CA-Sen: Brown Benefiting from Whitman/Poizner Fray

PPP (pdf) (5/21-23, registered voters, no trendlines, likely voters in primary):

Jerry Brown (D): 48
Meg Whitman (R): 36
Undecided: 16

Jerry Brown (D): 48
Steve Poizner (R): 32
Undecided: 19
(MoE: ±3.2%)

Meg Whitman (R): 51
Steve Poizner (R): 26
Someone else: 11
Undecided: 12
(MoE: ±4.8%)

It's starting to look like, after spending close to a combined $100 million of their own money against each other, than Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner have just gone all Angelides/Westly against each other. (Those were the two Democratic primary contenders in the 2006 gubernatorial election, who went so negative for so long against each other that eventual winner Phil Angelides was left radioactive and an easy mark for Arnold Schwarzenegger in the general.) Favorables for Whitman (24/44) and Poizner (19/43) are both truly awful, allowing the not-so-popular-himself Jerry Brown (37/39) to romp over each one in head-to-heads. The main difference in their performance, in PPP's first poll of the race, is that the more moderate Whitman fares better with indies against Brown than does Poizner. (UPDATE: Sitting still and watching the fight is paying great dividends for Brown: he's sitting on $20.6 million CoH, and has spent a whopping total of $400K this year.)

PPP (pdf) (5/21-23, registered voters, no trendlines, likely voters in primary):

Barbara Boxer (D): 45
Carly Fiorina (R): 42
Undecided: 13

Barbara Boxer (D): 47
Tom Campbell (R): 40
Undecided: 12

Barbara Boxer (D): 46
Chuck DeVore (R): 40
Undecided: 13
(MoE: ±3.2%)

Carly Fiorina (R): 41
Tom Campbell (R): 21
Chuck DeVore (R): 16
Someone else: 4
Undecided: 18
(MoE: ±4.8%)

The most interesting news here may be the PPP gives further confirmation to the sudden surge in the GOP primary by Carly Fiorina, which didn't really start showing up until this week. (Check out the Pollster.com regression lines.) Campbell still leads 32-30 among moderates, but there are more conservatives in the sample and Fiorina is up 47-15 among them (with DeVore at 19). In the general, we're seeing another symptom of Fiorina gaining and Campbell deflating as Fiorina doubled down on ads while Campbell went mostly dark: few polls prior to this one have seen the more conservative Fiorina overperforming Campbell against Barbara Boxer.

A couple other primary polls from Republican sources are in the same general range as PPP. Magellan (pdf) is a GOP pollster but doesn't have a candidate in the race (they've been offering polls in a number of primaries where they aren't involved, like Kentucky). They find a very similar 44 Fiorina, 21 Campbell, 14 DeVore in the Senate primary, while Meg Whitman is leading Steve Poizner 54-19 in the gubernatorial primary. That's an even better showing than the internal poll (pdf) from McLaughlin & Assocs that Meg Whitman put out yesterday, that had her leading 53-27. That brief Steve Poizner surge seems to have dissipated, if it ever actually existed and wasn't just a couple outliers appearing at once.

The Republicans have destroyed each other
Brown simply has to avoid bedding farm animals before November, even if Whitman's money should give her some spikes through the campaign.  Brown will win easily.

In complete contrast is the infinitely more low key, almost nice, Republican primary.  Fiorina has a reasonable number of nice commercials.  DeVore has very few.  Campbell appears to have been kidnapped to wherever Cheney hung out for eight years.  He is nowhere to be seen, and thank goodness for that.  He still runs close to Boxer despite being kidnapped by aliens.

Unless Boxer gets too negative on Fiorina, she'll also win, though she is less likeable than Brown (scary) and Fiorina is nowhere as toxic (like a houseguest who won't leave your TV) as Whitman.

These Fiorina commercials...
are running ALL THE DAMN TIME here in Los Angeles.

Here's the thing.  Democrats and Independents are also seeing those commercials on TV.  And Fiorina proudly waving her conservative flag can't help pull them over.  Though she is capitalizing on the current fear and loathing in the public.

And I'm sorry, but that first commercial is just... distracting.  Like Austin Powers said.............

this is why
This is why I only watch Hulu.

But it does now seem as if Campbell's gonna lose it because he has no money and people don't really know who he is, exactly.

Which is good news for....Barbara Boxer.

Carly Fiorina
is battle tested....in the art of getting her ass booted out of HP and vaporizing jobs.

By the way
These commercials are terrible. Pretty, but terrible. I think the second one is worse.

I love that she insults Barbara Boxer in each one, but it's especially hilarious when she does it for Boxer's bitter partisanship--in FAILorina's own bitterly partisan ads.

Irony is dead in the GOP Epistemic Closure Circuit.

Ugh. Those are awful.
First of all, that horrible attack ad music is bad enough. But why did they insist on shooting those actors in extreme closeup at the beginning of both clips? I'm sure they could have made Sen. Boxer look like the antichrist without that.

I'm actually kind of glad the GOP is going to probably get Carly Fiorina here. The woman has no political skills. She got canned from making appearances on behalf of McCain-Palin when she couldn't stay on message, which considering how bad that campaign got speaks volumes about her maladroitness as a politician. Secondly, being a failed CEO and getting rewarded with a golden parachute is not going to play well at all, especially in this climate. Third, touting herself as a social conservative and getting the Sarah Palin seal of approval is going to play like "Battlefield Earth" on opening weekend in California.

I imagine the Boxer campaign's opposition research on her could fill an entire floor of office space. I was much more afraid of Tom Campbell simply because he's prochoice, relatively moderate and not insane.

[ Parent ]
That's a good point
If you got basically fired from the McCain campaign because you couldn't focus and stay on message, well, then... you must be literally the worst stay-on-messager ever.

Wait a minute
Is she saying she's battle-tested? As in, "has been in battle"? Wait a minute, Carly Fiorina was never in the armed forces! She's a liar! She is lying about going into battle!

CARLY FIORINA IS A LIAR WHO IS DISHONORING AMERICA'S VETERANS!!!11!!!

She's running in a primary
so she doesn't care about Democrats and Independents.

Mildly attacking the Democrat is working loads better than the Republicans running for Gov removing each other's spleens.

[ Parent ]
Her new ad shows this
Nope, not moving to the center yet. She just released a new ad that mentions Palin's endorsement.

[ Parent ]
California is a badly needed governorship
Winning here would allow Democrats to create as many as eight new Democratic House seats.  There are so many Democratic wasted votes right now in a lot of districts that could be placed in Republican districts to make them Democratic.

Assuming they don't chicken out and do a wussy incumbent protector map again...
...and assuming the redistricting initiative doesn't pass.

[ Parent ]
It is a given they will wussy out
Losing the Governship would gain us seats in the House.

On the bright side, Brown is about the best Dem we can hope for in terms of redistricting.  he's at the end of his career, at most he'd have one more term.  H has no need to have it as a priority to protect chickenshit House members.

Damn
That pollster.com primary chart is going to kill the Devorites. (we need something better!). Thats what they always pointed to to say DeVore was stronger than Fiorina against Campbell, b/c she stayed in the mid-20's and 30's, while he had a huge surge from...8% to 14%. That arguments shot.
Oh, and Magellan caught the Fiorina surge too. http://campaigns.ratepoint.com...

Fiorina loaned campaign another 1.9 million
After the filing deadline. http://carlyforca.com/2010/05/...

I suspect Fiorina will start fleeing to the center, even before the primary
Especially if she's really up 20%+ points over Campbell now.

Nah
she won't risk having the wingnut vote in Orange County fleeing to Chuck DeVore.

The O.C. doesn't appear too keen on DeVore, even if he does reside there
If I'm not mistaken, most polling has shown DeVore scoring that same paltry 15-18%, even on his home territory. As I expected all along, Campbell's shored up liberals and moderates, Fiorina's got the rank-and-file conservatives, and DeVore's got the Tea Party folk. Fiorina's block far outnumbers the others.

The O.C.
Don't call it that.

Is that offensive in some way?
If so, I'd appreciate an education on the topic.

From Wikipedia
[Orange County] is also the setting of the 2003 sitcom Arrested Development. Most of the series was not filmed in Orange County, but in Culver City and Marina del Rey in Los Angeles County. A running joke in the series that pokes fun at The O.C. is that characters will frequently refer to Orange County as "The O.C.," followed by another character's saying, "Don't call it that" (mirroring the fact that many Orange County residents do not use the term "The O.C.").

Hehe...
I'd never heard of it as "the O.C." until the TV show came out.

So yeah, nobody actually calls it that, unless they're trying to sound "cool" by mimicking the show, and utterly failing in the process.

[ Parent ]
Like saying "Frisco"
.

[ Parent ]
Oh yeah
She's gonna move to the center so fast she'll get whiplash. She has to to win. I think she will wait to next week and see how it looks. Then she will probably start scaling back her ad buys and moving to the center if she continues to gain, especially if she gets over 50%.

[ Parent ]
She's going to have a hard time fleeing to the center.
What candidates say to win primaries often come back to haunt them in generals. Boxer can wrap the Palin endorsement, her support of the Arizona immigration law and her statements on being prolife/socially conservative around her candidacy with ease. Before even getting in to her failed tenure at HP, this makes her unelectable.

I know the national GOP is high on her, but she's just not going to play well in a general election in California.

[ Parent ]
Naw, it ain't over
I don't think she's dumb enough to really risk trying to turn toward the center until the fat lady has fully sung in the primary. The day after the primary is the day we suddenly see Carly the Centrist. And knowing her, she will do a terrible job at moving to the center.

The gov race is unfolding exactly as I predicted.
I can't wait to see this 2006-in-reverse race after the primary, especially in November!

Fiorina is now doing better against Boxer
In precicesly the same way Whitman starting doing better against Brown earlier in the year - she is the only one up big on tv.

Capbell doing far better against Boxer
http://www.latimes.com/news/lo...

14 points better, winning by 8 instead of Carly losing by 6.

Jerry Brown serenely meditates
while his opponents destroy each other.

It is simple, grasshopper.
