PA-12: Hafer Drops Out

All that sound and fury for nothing. Babs Hafer pulls the plug on her primary bid:

Hafer's withdrawal came less than 24 hours after she was still defiantly questioning the process by which her opponent, Mark Critz, had won the party's nomination for a special election. On Tuesday, she was still telling reporters that she planned to run in the May primary against Critz. She filed nominating petitions to get on the ballot, but said Wednesday she was withdrawing those petitions.

"We had a spirited campaign for who would make the best nominee in the special election, but in the spirit of Jack Murtha I believe now is not the time to continue this race," Hafer said in a statement. "I look forward to finding other ways to continue to serve the public and change this state and this country for the better."

This is good news for Critz, who now only faces primary competition from the lesser-known threesome that is Cambria County Controller Ed Cernic Jr., Navy veteran Ryan Bucchianeri and attorney Ron Mackell Jr. While it's pretty irritating that Hafer was continuing her attacks at fever pitch right up until yesterday, at least this is one less distraction to worry about.

UPDATE: As Adam B. notes in the comments, it looks like Hafer would have very likely been thrown off the ballot after barely filing enough signatures to qualify for the primary ballot. As you know, it's pretty easy to challenge the validity of signatures, which is why candidates with a competent organization ensure that they file many more signatures than they actually require.

Via PoliticsPA:
Capitolwire is reporting that Hafer would likely have been thrown off the primary ballot after gathering only 1,013 signatures - just 13 more than the minimum requirement.  She told the state Capitol news service that any challenge to remove her from the ballot would likely have been successful.

"We did file enough signatures, but we ran into some problems, and that could be a problem, if there was a challenge," Hafer said.

PA
I still think Singel would have been best here.

29/D/Male/NY-01

hmm.
A registered lobbyist who hasn't been in public life since 1995?

It could be that Critz's beliefs are the best fit for this district while remaining anathema to netroots support.

[ Parent ]
In my view, a Democrat better on the issues
than Critz claims to be could have won the district. The Republicans packed it with Dems in 2001.

[ Parent ]
except we both know ...
... when PA loses a seat next cycle, it'll almost certainly be this one.  So why sweat it?

[ Parent ]
On that basis, why not just concede the seat now?

[ Parent ]
But WHICH Democrats?
"Pro-life, pro-gun. pro-labor" is a norm there. Exactly  what Critz is...

[ Parent ]
Emphasis matters though
Mike Michaud is a great rep. Bark Stupak is a disaster for Democrats. Both are pro-life, pro-gun, pro-union.

[ Parent ]
I disagree somewhat
Yes, Stupak could be less loud in "tying" his anti-abortion amendment with the fate HCR bill in general. No doubt of that. But he is a "good reflection" of his district, with a lot of pro-life Democrats. So - both "yes" and "no"

[ Parent ]
He voted for Kucinich's
Afghanistan bill.

[ Parent ]
I had hoped that the locals
could come up with one. On paper, I think Hafer could have won. I am disappointed at her meltdown.

[ Parent ]
What would have happened if they picked Hafer and she didn't make the ballot?
That would've been a mess.
