SSP Daily Digest: 3/10 (Morning Edition)

by: DavidNYC

Wed Mar 10, 2010 at 8:01 AM EST

  • IL-Sen: In DC celebrating Greek Independence Day, Alexi Giannoulias also met with White House political advisors David Axelrod and Patrick Gaspard. No real word on what was discussed.
  • PA-Sen: Ouch - check out this blistering broadside directed at Joe Sestak from PA Democratic Chair T.J. Rooney. Rooney blasted Sestak in a sternly-worded letter for not paying his campaign workers the minimum wage and encouraged him to make a concerted effort to vote more often on the House floor. (JL)
  • TX-Sen: Will she resign or won't she? The Politico catches up with GOP Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, still fresh from her massively underwhelming performance in the Texas gubernatorial primary, and reports that she "has nothing to say, and I won't for a while" regarding her future plans. Senate Republicans, apparently, are taking her silence as a sign that a resignation is not actually in the cards, despite KBH's repeated promises in the past year that she would definitely be leaving the Senate regardless of the primary result. (JL)
  • CO-Gov: Teasing teaser Tom "The Teaser" Jensen teases us with this tease:
  • Well we'll have Colorado Governor numbers out [today] and here's a little preview - John Hickenlooper's net favorability is 36 points better than Bill Ritter's net approval. As you can imagine that makes Hickenlooper just a little more competitive in the horse race.

  • AL-05: It's the party switch which keeps on backfiring. Unlike a lot of other, uh, Republicans, Parker Griffith accepted a bunch of money from Charlie Rangel, which he was in a hurry to give back. The problem is that Rangel donated in 2008 - and Griffith recently told angry ex-supporters (to whom he had promised refunds) that he couldn't return their money from the previous cycle since it had already been spent.
  • GA-07: Ralph Reed says he'll announce his plans today, but according to Roll Call, GOP bigs think he's going to pass on a run. Reed's previous run for office did not go particularly well - he got crushed in the 2006 Republican primary for GA Lt. Gov., losing 56-44.
  • LA-03: Lawyer Jeff Landry joined the GOP field to replace Rep. Charlie Melancon yesterday, but CQ thinks that there are bigger names still in the offing: House Speaker Hunt Downer and Scott Angelle, "a Democrat who was named by Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal in late 2007 to serve as Louisiana's secretary of the Department of Natural Resources." Dems are also holding out hope for a more prominent candidate, such as state Rep. Fred Mills (who might decide after the legislative session ends on June 21) or former Rep. Chris John.
  • MI-01: Teacher and former Charlevoix County commissioner Connie Saltonstall plans to challenge Bart Stupak in the Democratic primary, specifically citing Stupak's infamous anti-choice amendment and threats to vote against healthcare reform if he doesn't get his way. Saltonstall lost a race against incumbent GOP state Rep. Kevin Elsenheimer in 2008, 61-37.
  • NM-01: NRCC Chair Pete Sessions will campaign in Albuquerque with fellow GOPer Jon Barela, who is hoping to unseat frosh Dem Martin Heinrich.
  • NY-13: Here's a nice score for frosh Dem Rep. Mike McMahon. Richmond County Borough President James Molinaro, an elected Republican who came up with the Conservative Party, has endorsed McMahon for another term in the House. Molinaro endorsed McMahon in 2008, but that was against the detested specimen that was Bob Straniere, who seemed to turn off just about every member of the Republican and Conservative Staten Island hierarchy. (JL)
  • NY-29: David Paterson says that he's going to call the special election "as soon as possible," and that he doesn't think the seat will be left vacant for the rest of the year.
  • House: Some chair shuffling as 69-year-old Rep. Norm Dicks, the second most-senior member of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, takes over the reins in the wake of John Murtha's passing, as expected. This mondo committee post potentially means tons more campaign donations will head Dicks' way, giving him a chance to shower that wealth on others.
  • WATN?: Ex-Rep. Eric Massa is now under investigation "for allegations that he groped multiple male staffers working in his office." Also yesterday, Glenn Beck apologized at the end of his Massa interview, saying: "America, I'm going to shoot straight to you. I think I've wasted your time."

    I read on First Read
yesterday that Giannoulias just signed up a major Obama fundraiser, whose identity was not disclosed.  So that's probably part of what happened at the meeting.

    34, WM, Democrat, FL-11

    Maybe it's Pritzker?
From the Hyatt fortune, ran Obama's fundraising, Chicago native.

    [ Parent ]
She was briefly considered for Sec of Commerce
Pritzker is one of the five bigwig family names of Chicago, along with Crown, Regenstein, Rosenwald, and one other I'm blanking out on.

    20, dude, RI-01 (registered) IL-01 (college)

    [ Parent ]
    Yet despite all that
Ex-WA Governor Gary Locke is running the show when Republican Judd Gregg withdrew his nomination when he couldn't support the stimulus.

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
    Pritzker withdrew her own name
She didn't want the job for some reason.  I feel a lot better about having a non-millionaire in that position.

    Little minds, meet your hobgoblin.

    PA
Sestak paying his workers horribly and being known to be rude and nasty with staffers certainly does not make him look good.  I really wish he would drop out and run for Governor or run for his current seat.

    29/D/Male/NY-01

yesterday was the PA filing deadline.
    Sorry.

In other PA news, Barbara Hafer has dropped out of the PA-12 general primary.

    [ Parent ]
    I've had it with Sestak
The way he's conducted himself in this primary has really turned me off. This is coming from someone who wanted Arlen Specter primaried. Does anybody really believe the WH offered him a job in exchange for dropping his primary campaign?

    [ Parent ]
I absolutely believe he was offered a job
The Obama administration has been very involved in down ballot races.

    [ Parent ]
I be very supportive of the WH if they ever did that
I like Joe alot, he has been a great Rep and a decent primary challenger to Specter. Sad to see him leave office with nothing to show for it per se.

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
I find it hard to believe...
They've obviously been heavily involved in downballot races and for good reason in many cases.

If anything, it seems more likely that they'd want to push Sestak back to running for re-election to his House seat. We got a good recruit in Bryan Lentz, but Sestak's retirement and the entry of Pat Meehan has put us in real danger of losing that seat.

The main reason I don't think he was offered an administration job is because he's not a team player at all. It's obvious he's very much his own man and would probably bristle at having to follow the administration line if he got an executive branch job.

    [ Parent ]
    Agreed
It's been obviously since he took the oath that Sestak is his own boss. I remember reading an article in the Hill about three years ago that he was constantly losing staffers because he overworked them by making them work weekends and holidays and that he dosen't have a warm personality. These type of people don't gel well in the executive branch.

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
    Maybe both
Run for re-election and you get a top job in the future.

    [ Parent ]
Hard to believe from an Admiral
Admiral Sestak, rtd, not a team player?

I think he'd be fine in an appropriate executive branch job, perhaps in Veterans' Affairs (assuming that gets around the restriction on military officers taking exec branch jobs.)

    Damn border state...
We the Democratic citizens of Albuquerque have the following to say to Pete Sessions:

    Go fuck yourself.

    That is all.

We do have a candidate in OR-02
Unfortunately, her chances do not seem promising. ref http://www.mailtribune.com/app...

Segers has never held elective office, has lived in the district only since September and acknowledges she has a lot to learn about the state and its political process.

Segers said she decided to run while attending a women's leadership conference in the fall in California, where attendees were asked to stand if they could commit to running for a federal office.

    However, I admire her courage.

The incumbent is Greg Walden, the district has a PVI of R+10.

Well, to say "her chances do not seem promising"
may be politically correct way to say "her chaces are zero"?

    [ Parent ]
No, it means I have little data on her
especially if she can get funding for sufficient name recognition.

But it is fair to say that like DeFazio's opponent in OR-04 is "some dude"

As of right now, it is fair to say that Segres is "some dudette".

    [ Parent ]
    Question
Question for Glenn Beck: when have you not wasted America's time?

    Scott Angelle
This man's name has been floated for months, is it still assumed he would run as a Republican or has anyone put on any recruiting efforts on our side?

Please donate to amcharities.org to help build more after school centers in the Miami area.

    23, Democrat, IA-2

    Angelle
His name has also been mentioned as a possible Lt. Gov appointee. I'd assume if Jindal appointed him, he'd become a Republican. Most Democrats hope former Rep. Chirs John runs, but it seems unlikely.

I made a comment http://swingstateproject.com/s...  the other day saying that we should primary kucinich. Thanks KOS!

    36, Dem, IN-09

    Nice
Great for Kos for saying that since alot of DK money last year when he faced a primary challenge came from the netroots? Wonder what happened? Kos generally like Dennis I thought.

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
    Markos has always disliked Dennis
I, on the other hand, actually respect him a lot more for what he's been doing during the Obama administration.

    Little minds, meet your hobgoblin.

    [ Parent ]
    He always disliked Kucinich?
Whhen did give off those types of feelers on Kos or else where? Also what has he been doing during the Obama Administration that you respected him for?

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
    Well i'm shocked
But even though the story he wrote was three years ago, i'm not suprised. He dosen't like DK because before 2004 he was pro-life then switched his positions because he was running for Pres, wanting to start the BS Department of Peace, was ranted one of the world worst Mayors EVER going back close to 100 years, it's amazing he sucked that bad and got on that list since he wasn't in office that long. I can go on but I won't. Anyways good for Markos for coming out on Countdown saying that about DK.

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
    You
like him for opposing the Obama agenda for not being left enough? If HCR fails because of him, will you still like him?

    36, Dem, IN-09

We try to stay out of politics on this site, right?
I'm actually very radical in most of my views, and also support third-party movements.  However, there's a side of me that's a numbers junkie and loves the horse race, and I try to be pretty hard-nosed on this site.  I like it for what it is, and I don't expect folks here to be uber-progressives like I am, but yeah, I do like Dennis's views.

    Little minds, meet your hobgoblin.

    [ Parent ]
You injected politics into this thread
When you said you "Respected" the job DK is doing. You opened the floodgates on that one. Well I don't like Dennis because for one he's a purist and he's always had the if you don't like my idea i'm shooting down the whole thing mentality and that I don't accept. I don't like lawmakers that vote down good legislation because it dosen't pass their own smell test. Those people are shitkickers. That's why I don't repect DK or his views

Glad you you don't expect folks here to be uber-progressives because not everyone here is. But hey before we go ahead of ourselves and enngage in a flame war, let's agree to disagree and move on. Regardless I don't agree with you on Kucinich but I do like what uou contribute to this sitr so lets just agree to disagree and move on. Don't want to derail the thread.

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
    Kucinich
Hasn't done squat in these two years expect grandstand and vote down legislation just because it dosen't pass his magic purity test he has. The man cares about no one but himself. I think it's great what Markos wants do do and it will probally happen because no matter what liberal blogger says to him he'll vote it down. Congrats to Kos.

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
    If you recall
This was tried back in 2008, when four well-heeled challengers (including one, amazingly, from the left) ran against Kucinich in the primary.  Kucinich prevailed with 50% of the vote.

    Little minds, meet your hobgoblin.

    [ Parent ]
    Yeah
And that because his four challengers split the anti-kucinich vote and that's how he got through. Same can be said with Dan Lipinski in Illinois. When you get a bunch of candidates to primary someone those people will divide the anti-incumbent vote and the incumbent will win. Watch in IN this year, the same will happen to Dan Burton.

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
Kucinich got 50% of the vote
When you get half the vote, it doesn't matter how many challengers you have -- you're still going to win.

    Little minds, meet your hobgoblin.

    [ Parent ]
    Right
But it dosen't help when your trying to take out an incumbent and you got more than one candidate dividing up the anti-incumbent vote, which allowed DK to get 50 percent of the vote.

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
    Very true
And you're right that if somebody could show in a poll that they were trailing by like 48-43 in a mano-a-mano race, that somebody might start to get more money to run against him.

    Little minds, meet your hobgoblin.

    [ Parent ]
    Exactly
I like to see if it was DK vs. Cimperman only. If DK got well over 50 over him then I would say to you the man's unbeatable. The fact remains when your trying to take out an incembent and it's you and like three other running, there going to split the anti vote to let the incumbent win, the same thing will happen in Indiana with Dan Burton. I agree with you on your statement.

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
    OMG, Dan Burton
What a clusterf**k on the GOP side.  They've got another guy who everybody hates (and Buyer makes three), and ten thousand strong opponents are going to make him sail out of the primary untouched.

    Little minds, meet your hobgoblin.

    [ Parent ]
Oh yeah it is a clusterfu**
You got five guys trying to pluck out Burton, boy how will that now end up in a purality victory for Burton? lol. As for Buyer it's more than that, only difference is 12 GOPers are fighting for the nomination, not trying to knock off Buyer who's retiring. But still there both clusterfu** to put it real nicely.

    22, Male, Democrat, PA-18.

    [ Parent ]
It was because none of the candidates were better than him
Kucinich is hated by the right and centre of the Democratic Party, and the more administration-friendly and accomplishment-focused parts of the left see him as a gadfly at best.

That leaves his base of support limited to those on the left who value him for shifting the Overton window - and he doesn't even do that very much, as he's been tarred as a crazy liberal since his 2004 run (and in fairness his actions since have often played up this stereotype).

That ought to have left him vulnerable. But the reason he won the primary is not because of a split vote, it's because nobody liked his challengers and none of them were competent enough to beat him. Most of them were conservadem windbags and none of them built an organisation to beat him.

You want to primary Kucinich? It ought to be possible, as he's known for being bad at constituent service. If you want to do that, you run a campaign based on fighting for unions, Cleveland issues and heavily targetting elderly voters. You emphasise that you'll work with other congressmen and bring back as much pork for the district as you can.

You steadfastly avoid any conservative soundbytes and you try to build outreach to left-wing grassroots organisations like DFA and lobby groups like the Sierra Club and the SEIU. You don't do that to win their endorsement, but to ensure they give Dennis only an endorsement, not a host of soundbytes to attack you with. If you're lucky, they just don't endorse.

And most importantly, you knock on every door in the district, and make sure you meet every precinct captain in OH-10.

Do that, and you might beat Kucinich second time round. Whinge about him being too left-wing, and you just aren't going to define yourself favourably enough to get anywhere.

    I
read today that in all of the bills he's sponsored in his tenure, only four made it out of committee with three into law. He sounds like an accomplished legislature doesn't he?
