WY-Gov: No Third Term for Freudenthal

All good things must come to an end:

Wyoming political sources say Gov. Dave Freudenthal will announce today that he will not run for a third term....

Had Freudenthal decided to run again, he would have faced a state law limiting the state's top elected officials to two terms. But it was expected that he could have successfully mounted a challenge to the law under the state constitution. The Wyoming Supreme Court earlier invalidated a term limit for state legislators.

I hadn't really thought about Freudenthal's dilemma recently, but it does seem like, if he were going to set about challenging the state's term limit law, he should have begun the legal process months ago, in order to have a ruling on his side with enough time to run an effective campaign. So, considering that there are only three months until Wyoming's Democratic primary (5/28), it shouldn't be a surprise he's wrapping things up.

Still, a bad side effect of the Freudenthal's long wait is that Democrats have to scramble to find a replacement. State Sen. Mike Massie was rounding up support (with Freudenthal's blessing) late last year to run if Freudenthal didn't, so he probably has a head-start on any other Dems who want to take a whack at trying to hold the state house in this dark-red state. With a number of Republican heavyweights either in the race (state Auditor Rita Meyer, former US Attorney Matt Mead) or poised to get in (state House speaker Colin Simpson), this looks like a difficult retention for the Dems no matter who they put up. (Swing State Project already had this race at "Likely Republican," in expectation that Freudenthal wouldn't run again, so we don't need to move anything.)

Bit of a bummer
But now WY goes the way of the rest of the gubernatorial elections, red states go back to electing Republican governors and blue states go back to elected Democrats.

And thankfully, there isnt anything strategic about keeping WY gov save for how it makes the map look with a big blue square added and an automatic +1 to our election results.

When I say strategic, how do other people interpret what makes a state one we should strategically go for, as Democrats/progressives/politically junkies.  It seems that I only worry about other state's gubernatorials for two reasons, redistricting and the possibility of pro-gay rights legislation.  Anyone else got other reasons about caring for other state's local elections besides those two, and I suppose for more blue on the map?

Senator appointments
In WY that's not an issue: the Governor appoints someone from the same party as the departing senator from a list of three people drawn up by the state party.

Well, I'll be cheering team blue on in Wyoming nevertheless.
Thank you Gary Trauner for the inspiration beginning four years ago.

Speaking of Trauner, any word on what he plans to do, politically?

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

He Came Close
He came close to bluening the only solid-Red Congressional delegation in the country, didn't he?

What if Freudenthal were to run for the House?

I don't think Freudenthal's a progressive by any definition of the word, tho.

It's a shame the DCCC didn't commit more resources to Trauner in 2006 when he was running against Cubin...

[ Parent ]
It wasn't the only all-red delegation
We also had Alaska and Idaho back then.

Of course, both of those have since been broken.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

This good news in that there is at least hope now
he will run for Federal office.

He passed on a shot at two senate seats, so I doubt he wants to go to Washington, but the state might be willing to trust him with a House seat, which would be awesome.

This is not a good new

Im not surprised, but would be better if he run.

I wait for news from this race since months.

I think republicans will fight against term limits when they need. Sure.

Blue states are becoming the key for democrats this year.

You're right
Blue states are our only hope of salvaging our slim lead in governor's mansions.  We are only favored to win in one red state - Arkansas.  The others in order of likelihood:

1. GA-OPEN
2. AZ-Brewer
3. TX-Perry
4. TN-OPEN
5. OK-OPEN
6. SD-OPEN
7. AL-OPEN
8. SC-OPEN
9. AK-Parnell
10. UT-Herbert
11. KS-OPEN
12. WY-OPEN
13. ID-Otter
14. NE-Heineman

We've got a shot at the first three.  The others look tough, although I'd love to see some Tennessee polling to confirm the prevailing wisdom that R's have the edge.

Hmm
I think I'd put SC ahead of AL. Not a bad ranking, otherwise.

[ Parent ]
I struggled with ranking those two.
I hope (and expect) that Davis will drive up AA turnout to the point where he will be pretty competitive.  That would also be good news for Bobby Bright (not that he seems to need it in light of this week's poll shocker).

Jim Rex is no slouch in SC though, and Republicans could end up with a loose cannon in Bauer.

Wonder if
Freudenthal runs for Senate or the at large seat sometime. He could beat Barrasso in 2012 or Lummis now. I think Lummis would probably run for Governor if he ran for her seat, the Mike Castle, Tom Carper switcheroo.

If he wanted the Senate, wouldn't the last election
against Barrasso been the time?  Before he got entrenched I mean.

[ Parent ]
Perhaps
Although he may have wanted to complete his term or he could have a change of heart and decide that he doesn't want to leave politics. It sucks that he didn't run in 2008, he would have won. I actually wonder if he just didn't want to benefit of someone's death.

Freudenthal is not a Dem you would want in Congress
He'd probably be to the right of Ben Nelson.

[ Parent ]
He
supported Obama over Clinton, that's worth something. I wouldn't expect him to be Barbara Boxer or anything, but from what I found from a quick search he seems like your average populist blue dog. He is even pro-choice. We have many more conservative dems in Congress.

So?
That's about 1000 miles to the left of the two dudes representing Wyoming now.

[ Parent ]
Exactly
It's just ridiculous for any Democrat to prefer Barrasso or Enzi to Freudenthal.

Agree completely
Who cares about that when you have such "stars" as Enzi and Barasso as "your" Senators

[ Parent ]
How do Enzi and Barrasso score on the sanity scale?
Like, y'know how Inhofe and Coburn are on one end and Bennett is too close to the other?

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

[ Parent ]
Bennett?
You mean Olympia Snowe? The Maine ladies have got to be the sanest Republicans. Voinovich & Lugar would be my runners-up for that award.

Kansan by birth, Californian by choice, and Gay by the grace of God.

[ Parent ]
Snowe is not "too close"
She's "off the deep end", from their perspective.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

[ Parent ]
Enzi can be halfway reasonable
Very conservative, but not a dick with it.

Not sure about Barrasso. I think he's more like DeMint than Lugar.
