TX-Gov: Bill White Polls Well for General Election

PPP (pdf) (2/4-7, likely voters)

Bill White (D): 42
Rick Perry (R-inc): 48
Undecided: 10

Bill White (D): 38
Kay Bailey Hutchison (R): 45
Undecided: 17

Bill White (D): 38
Debra Medina (R): 44
Undecided: 18
(MoE: ±2.8%)

PPP (which had surprising Republican primary numbers yesterday, showing Kay Bailey Hutchison imperiled as far as even making it to a runoff) has some pretty encouraging numbers for Democratic candidate Bill White in the general election. White's losing, but by a 6 or 7 point margin, a good showing in a generally conservative state like Texas. (On the down side, there aren't a lot of undecideds here, especially in the Rick Perry matchup, so you have to wonder where the last few votes that would get him over the top might come from.)

Interestingly, unlike a lot of other polls which have shown Hutchison, who passes for a "moderate" by Texas standards, outperforming in the general, PPP finds everyone performing about the same vis-a-vis White, not just the very conservative Rick Perry but even the around-the-bend conservative Debra Medina. Perry's approvals, a woeful 33/50, seem to be holding him back; KBH is at least in positive territory at 40/37, while Medina and White benefit from not being as well-known, at 32/13 and 34/17 respectively.

In other news, White just got the endorsement of the Texas League of Conservation Voters, while his primary opponent, Farouk Shami got a noteworthy endorsement of his own: from the Mexican American Democrats, who liked how his personal story represents "what the American Dream is all about." I don't think either of those endorsements can compete with the one Rick Perry just pulled in, though: the mighty Home Scholers.

Hispanic voters ?
Hispanic voters - Perry 53; White 41 - that seems odd ?

Indeed it does
It's too bad PPP didn't give us crosstabs by area code. It would be good to know how White is doing in metro Houston vs the rest of the state. If he can win the Houston and Dallas suburbs, he can squeak out a win. But that's a very tall order.

Nope
Not enough registration where the Hispanics are. Hispanics overall should be heavily White. Hispanics that will actually vote, should be fairly even.

Voter registration in the Valley, you can sign them up, you can get them registered, but they will have no idea what the voter card is or what they are supposed to do with it, OR they will just feel intimidated by the thought of showing up to vote and choose to never go through with it.

Half of the voting Hispanics live in the suburbs or have a believe in some kind of corruption and will always vote for an incumbent believing there will be some reward later, or not want to be scapegoated for changing the system.

It's the way it is, they are timid, quiet, and stick to their own. This is a likely voter scan, not Hispanics overall.

Senate
Is that other popular Democrat still going for the senate seat? I wonder how he polls in the senate race.
Good news is White has the most room to grow.

[ Parent ]
Yeah, Sharp is still in.

Polls Well?
How in the world is losing to all 3 by decent margins, including the teabagger polling well?

29/D/Male/NY-01

Polls well
A Democrat being down only 6 to an incumbent Republican governor in the state of Texas in this political environment is not bad at all.

Clown.

Why I just outta....
@%$%^% you in the ^*&*(@ right now.

You do realize that, Generic R v D numbers aside, :
- White has yet to campaign?
- No body knows him and everyone knows Perry and KBH.
- Perry's been governor since 2000 and KBH as Senator since 1993 and folks are tired of the same ol same ol
- He is raising goobles of money and spending nothing.
- Debra Medina is a certified loon, whom if nominated will be abandoned by the entire GOP

So if you realized that, you'd talk differently. But, then again....

Indepedent/Lean D. Dude.

I'm not going to say much
Because the others that have commented to your post basically summed up my thinkig about this race, but you know nothing about politics. Do you? If you did you realize that these polls aren't bad given the evnironment and it's Texas were talking about.

HOME SCHOLERS
Classic. That's The Onion-worthy

"Is our children learning?"

[ Parent ]
Well, is they?
I don't think Bush ever answered that question.

[ Parent ]
He didn't answer the question
because he was too busy trying to lead humans in coexisting peacefully with fish.

Ha! Rick Perry got an education group's endorsement.
Granted, the group in question is super cray cray. Rick Perry is to education as Martha Coakley is to winning Senate races.

Debra Medina...the 9/11 truth sympathizer?
Stick a fork in her.
