NOLA-Mayor: Mitch Landrieu Wins Race, Avoids Runoff

by: DavidNYC

Well, he sure made that look easy:

Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu appears to have routed five major challengers in today's mayoral primary, riding a sense of regret among voters who rejected him four years ago and extraordinary biracial support to claim a rare first-round victory.

With 90 of the city's 366 precincts counted, Landrieu had 64 percent of the vote, according to WWL-TV. His closest challenger, businessman Troy Henry, had 15 percent.

When he takes office May 6, Landrieu will become the city's first white chief executive since his father, Moon Landrieu, left the job in 1978. Early analysis shows that Mitch Landrieu's victory owed to widespread crossover voting by African-Americans, who make up two-thirds of the city's residents.

This was Landrieu's third try at the office - he lost in a runoff to outgoing mayor Ray Nagin in 2006. State Sen. Ed Murray's unexpected departure from the race in January was a big part of Landrieu's landslide, but the NYT identifies another interesting reason:

Just as the election was gaining heat, the Saints happened to win a trip to the Super Bowl and all talk of the mayor's race was drowned out for its last two weeks. That made it much harder for lesser-known candidates to gain traction.

As a Jets fan, I am definitely rooting for the Saints over the Colts. Feel free to use this as a Super Bowl open thread!

UPDATE: As Izengabe points out in comments, Gov. Bobby Jindal will get to appoint a replacement for Landrieu (his pick has to be confirmed by a majority of both houses of the state lege). GOPVoter provides a list of possible names, but note that Jindal is also trying to get rid of the Lt. Gov. position entirely.

For anyone curious about the fate of the coroner's race the incumbent (and target of the ad) destroyed his opponent.

to answer my own question....
§15. Vacancy in Office of Lieutenant Governor
Section 15. Should a vacancy occur in the office of lieutenant governor, the governor shall nominate a lieutenant governor, who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of the elected members of each house of the legislature. If the unexpired term exceeds one year, such person shall serve as lieutenant governor only until the office is filled as provided in Section 16(B) of this Article.
Amended by Acts 2006, No. 858, §1, approved Sept. 30, 2006, eff. Oct. 31, 2006.

So Jindal gets to pic a new Lt Gov to serve until a new election for the post in November.

Most likely Jay Dardenne
Him and John Kennedy have been sucking up to Jindal for weeks trying to secure appointment. I wouldn't be surprised if Jindal appointed an interim successor until the election in November. Potential candidates-
SoS Jay Dardeene (R)
Treasurer John Kennedy (R)
Sen. Pres Joel Chaisson (D)
Sen. Pres Pro Tem Sharon Weston Broome (D)
John Georges was talked about tonight as a candidate
Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco (D)
Country Music Singer Sammy Kershaw (R)
Coin Dealer Paul Hollis (R)
Maybe others

what about cao?
sure the dems will prob gain the seat, but it's not as though reps could keep it.  further this way they can groom him to be the next gov/sen.

Top ten signs you're an SSPer #1: your favorite song is "Panic At Tedisco" and no one understands what you mean.

[ Parent ]
If Cao wants a statewide future, that might be his logical next step
Even if he loses by around 20 points in Nov. (a respectable loss for a Republican in this district) too many will just say 'oh well he lost re-election by at least 20 pts...hes damaged goods!'. Its a respectable loss, IMO but i dont think its what the establishment will think. Possibly along with Scott Brown his best bet, if he wants to move up, is to simply not run for re-election.

[ Parent ]
He's busy
Running for re-election. The election for Lt. Gov will likely be held the same day as the congressional elections. I'm assuming the primary will be the day of the run-off for the regularly scheduled elections and a Jeff. Parish special election (Oct. 2)

[ Parent ]
too bad we can't say the same about you
Jindal has made a good case for eliminating the lieutenant governor's job(snip)
He will appoint somebody whom he has expressed would be somebody who would not want to run for the job (if it exists). Although some Democrats hoping against hope argue that since a Democrat was there another should replace him, the potential stakes are way too high to allow this and Jindal knows it. If for some reason Jindal leaves office (if so probably not voluntarily given his stated ambition to serve at least a full term) that would give a Democrat the top job. A Republican soon will be named.
With the possible elimination of the office, GOP Sec. of State Jay Dardenne will not want to leave what probably would become the new gubernatorial successor office. The best bet, given the potential excising of the office within two years, probably would be a choice of a Republican legislator of conservative leanings from a safe district who is term-limited and was planning on retiring from politics. This selection should produce a fascinating scenario over the few weeks.

Just FYI
this is a Democratic-leaning blog. Republican posters are welcome, as long as they don't promote candidates.

I appreciate you
Reinforcing the site's code of conduct, but I don't think there's too much of a problem with the comment above yours. Though the boldface is really weird!

[ Parent ]
Don't think the bold was weird
He was just answering the question about Jay Dardeene saying it isn't likely he would get the post wich was the topic of the discussion.

I also thought it was strange that Jay Dardeene would want the post of Lt Gov so I got what ngshmshd was saying.

How about Stormy?

Maybe she pulled out.

You know
I dismissed that poll showing a divide on who rooted for the Saints and the Colts, but I have not heard one democrat on here cheering for the colts. Maybe it was somewhat accurate :)

GO COLTS!!!!

Proud member of the Indiana Democratic Party from IN-9.

An Obama effect here?
I'm glad to see that so many African-Americans voters supported Mitch Landrieu in the N'awlins election. Could a piece of this be that some blacks are now more willing to vote for a white candidate, since they saw many whites vote for Obama?

Racial polarization has badly hurt Democrats in the South. The Republicans are happy when we are seen as the party of blacks only. And some racially charged primaries, or potential ones (e.g. the Senate race in Alabama in 2008), have not given us the strongest candidate.

When more whites will vote for black candidates and more blacks vote for white candidates, it could help build, or rebuild, the Democratic Party in the South as a coalition of labor-union/working-class and liberal whites, instead of limiting our opportunities solely to ghettoized VRA districts.

I hope that Mitch Landrieu will carry on his family's progressive record by governing New Orleans in a fair and inclusive way, so the black voters in NOLA do not ever feel cheated by this election.

It's more because there wasn't a serious African-American candidate
There was a state Senator that dropped out, which made Troy Henry, a generic rich guy, the only major black candidate in the race. The changing demographics of post-Katrina New Orleans may have played a part as well, but Landrieu won big among early voters, which were 2/3 black. I'd also say that white voters in NoLa are probably more progressive than white voters in the rest of the state. I'm guessing Obama probably won about 1/3 of the white vote in New Orleans, while in the rest of the state it was closer to 15%.

[ Parent ]
Troy Henry
And the fact that he used the race card every 5 minutes and had Nagin do it for him when he wasn't probably didn't help him win much white support.

[ Parent ]
New Orleans white vote
According to 2008 Census data, New Orleans was 31% white and 61% black, with the balance being mostly Hispanic and Asian. Even if you generously assume that every black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, and "other" voter chose Obama, and that Hispanics and Asians turned out at population, that only gets the Obama vote to 69%. Since Obama won 79% in New Orleans, he must have gotten at least a third of the New Orleans white vote.

Im definitely avoiding the Super Bowl
Stupid Brett Favre and the Vikings blowing our shot!!!!!  Ugh, we just had to throw that game away.  Im just really waiting for the day that the Vikings make it to the Super Bowl because I have been getting teased for YEARS about it happening.  And it's gotta be with Favre because that would really piss off the cheese heads.  :)

If anything, our great showing this season with Favre leading us has gotten the governor's office working out a deal to get the public funding the Vikings want for new a stadium, which makes me quite happy.  (The Twins, the Vikings, and the U of M Gophers have all shared one stadium and then all wanted their own  few years ago when their leases' were running up so now us Minnesotans have been trying to figure out how to fund three stadiums, a light rail transit system, and fund part of the Mall of America expansion, all during an economic downturn.)

Also not watching because CBS really pissed me off by them showing the pro-life Tebow ad during the game and now four times during the pre-game stuff while rejecting all the pro-gay ads.

:D
Don't ya just love the Saints?
WHO DAT!!!

Subsidies for the Rich
You might want to click over to Open Left, where a post earlier today by Paul Rosenberg details how public money for professional sports team owners amounts to about $2 billion a year, teams exempt from anti-trust laws -- pure corporate welfare.

Ask yourself, Will the Vikings continue to play without new skyboxes for corporate patrons? Would expanded transit provide travel options for tens of thousands of citizens, allow some 2-car households to become 1-car households and save about $8,000 a year, all while reducing damage to the environment?

[ Parent ]
I read the book Free Lunch
cant remember who it is by but its all about corporate welfare and there is a whole chapter on it, so no worries, Ive done my research and I only support public funding in certain situations, with this one being one of the few publicly funded giveaways to corporations I am for.

And I wont delve into why because alas, now we are off-topic and no longer talking about horse race politics.  Unfortunate, Id love to delve into why a new Vikings stadium would be excellent for Minneapolis.  (Note I say MPLS, not MN which is a hint at my bias on why Im for finding some solution.)

[ Parent ]
Another exception
I grew up near San Antonio, where some years back the city fathers decided, "Build a domed stadium and a pro team will come." Yeah, sorta. Not football, not baseball, but a lowly basketball team.

The Alamo Dome worked pretty well for tractor pulls, revivals, and similar events. But the Spurs had to play in a U-shaped end section with curtains separating their "arena" from the rest of the space. That didn't stop them from winning NBA championshipS. When the owner asked for a new arena, nobody dared oppose it. Even I felt that, after all, this team had earned it.

However, I wouldn't want even one of my dollars to go for still another stadium for a pro football team, should one materialize. Of course, these things are usually not put to a vote. All backroom deals.

[ Parent ]
Think of it this way
Sports teams are regarded as non-profits thus they don't have to pay the taxes. If we take away their tax exempt status how would that go . . .

NFL/MLB/NBA/NHL Commissioner "The federal government is desperate for money and we'd be happy to pay them some but it will take a lot of overhead from us, so we're going to have to cancel a few teams; Washington is out to take your favorite sports team away to pay for their mismanaged budget mess."

After our messaging on health care or even Martha Coakley's keen rhetoric on Red Sox baseball, do you really think we could win that argument? No, sports fans would be up in arms and come for us in ways teabaggers could only dream of.

And that's why "The NBA Cares." Cause they don't have to pay taxes and are some smart, smart people.

[ Parent ]
Pro sports are tax exempt?
Are you sure on that?  Sorry, that just doesn't sound accurate to me.

[ Parent ]
Yeah
I thought they were mostly Republican because of tax?

[ Parent ]
They are profit-making and very much so
Some of these franchises are worth over half a billion bucks, and of course, their mega-rich owners are usually worth even more.

http://www.forbes.com/2007/09/...

Those feel-good charitable activities like NBA Cares are probably tax-deductible.

I know we're sort of off-topic, but this is as close to being on-topic as I can be on a Superbowl thread!

OMG!
I LOVE CORPORATE WELFARE WHEN WE WIN11!!!1111 PARTYY--- HOORAY! SAINTS!

Ahem. There are no parties for mass transit planning.

I don't like that it's true, either. But I deal nonetheless.

Stacy Head
So Mitch won the election and then the Saints won the Super Bowl. I'd bet more than a few New Orleans voters will take that as a positive omen. And he can't be worse than Nagin, right?

Btw, who is this Stacy Head? She just won re-election to the city council and she looks like the less hot version of Winifred "Fred" Burkle from TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel. However, even being less hot does leave quite a bit of room for geeky hotness in my opinion.

According to the Times-Picayune, she: "swamped Corey Watson in District B, which comprises the Central Business District, Garden District, Central City and much of Uptown."

The media narratives seem to range from impassioned reformer to divisive whiner and I was curious to see what folks in the know thought...

Anyhoo, here's to all the little future "Drew" and "Reggie" babies being conceived right at this very moment. And to Head...

Ahem. Sorry.
