NYC-Mayor: Thompson to Run Again in 2013; NY-Sen-B: Harold Ford, Srsly?

by: DavidNYC

Tue Jan 05, 2010 at 10:37 PM EST

Still more big news today:

Former Comptroller William C. Thompson Jr., who lost to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in an unexpectedly close race in November, said on Tuesday that he had decided to run for mayor again in four years.

"I am not running for office this year; it is my intention to run for mayor in 2013," he said in an interview. "While I have been flattered by the large number of people who have reached out to me to suggest that I run statewide this year, the issues I raised in New York City - the need for good-paying jobs and closing the affordability gap - those are issues I still feel strongly about."

"While it's a great state, I grew up in the city and love the city, and feel like I am uniquely qualified to be the mayor," he said.

This is certainly one of the earliest imaginable announcements for any race, well, ever - but it's probably the strongest move Thompson can make. All of the other races he was reportedly considering - against Kirsten Gillibrand for Senate, against Tom DiNapoli for state Comptroller, or against Charlie Rangel for the 15th CD House seat - would have involved primarying an incumbent, and a loss in any of those would likely have been a career-ender. Thompson may yet have to deal with a contested Dem primary for the mayoral race in four years' time, but with this announcement, he's the instant front-runner, and probably gives pause to other would-be contenders.

The person probably happiest about this right now is Gillibrand, who has managed to avoid primary challenges from a whole hell of a lot of people. The unhappiest? I'm guessing Rep. Anthony Weiner. While I'd expect him to try running again in 2013, Thompson now has a lot of cred as the guy who dared to take on Bloombo (and almost won) when no one else was willing. I'm not generally one to care about "waiting one's turn," but I think a lot of people who matter will feel that Thompson has earned a second shot, while Weiner bailed when the chips were down.

But about that Gillibrand streak of luck...

Encouraged by a group of influential New York Democrats, Harold Ford Jr., the former congressman from Tennessee, is weighing a bid to unseat Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand in this fall's Democratic primary, according to three people who have spoken with him.

Mr. Ford, 39, who moved to New York three years ago, has told friends that he will decide whether to run in the next 45 days. The discussions between Mr. Ford and top Democratic donors reflect the dissatisfaction of some prominent party members with Ms. Gillibrand, who has yet to win over key constituencies, especially in New York City.

About a dozen high-profile Democrats have expressed interest in backing a candidacy by Mr. Ford, including the financier Steven Rattner, who, along with his wife, Maureen White, has been among the country's most prolific Democratic fund-raisers.

When this story first "broke," I thought it had to be some kind of joke - sort of like Bob Kerrey's absurd (and mercifully brief) flirtation with the idea for running for NYC mayor in 2005. But somehow, it looks like this crazy Ford idea is quite a bit more real than that. I simply can't imagine how Ford, an extremely conservative Southerner who ran for office in Tenneesse just three years ago, could have much appeal to New York Democrats. While the comparisons to Hillary Clinton are inevitable, I think there are a hell of a lot more differences than similarities.

In any event, if Ford does run, nothing could make me want to support Gillibrand (about whom I've been quite lukewarm) more. I suspect a whole lot of other people and organizations will be similarly motivated. Ultimately, it sounds like Ford is being propelled by wealthy interests similar to those which backed Tom Suozzi in his suicidal run against Eliot Spitzer in the 2006 gubernatorial primary. While Gillibrand's lock on the nomination isn't quite as secure as Spitzer's was, I think these moneybags will see their dollars run into a stiff wall of grassroots and establishment resistance. Democratic primary politics in New York state ain't beanbag.

I still think it's a joke
I can't wait to hear how Chuck Schumer deals with this. Better yet, I hope I don't.

Betsy McCaughey
If Betsy McCaughey challenged Kirsten Gillibrand this would be awesome. Gillibrand would crush the hell out of her while Betsy would go on tangents every day about how the government is trying to kill our seniors. Generally, I would think that the GOP would not be that stupid, however, with Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Linda McMahon, Chuck DeVore, etc. it sounds like extremist candidates are in thing for the GOP!

Linda McMahon's an extremist?
A joke? Probably. But a right-wing, tea-bagging extremist? Not quite.

Actually ur right
In that race Peter Schiff is the extremist. If Dodd drops out and Blumenthal becomes the nominee expect Simmons and McMahon to flee the race and Schiff will become the nominee and will be lucky if he gets to 30% on election night

[ Parent ]
Looks like your getting your wish
Dodd is expected to announce his retirement tomorrow.
Big day today!
Bad news for both parties
Bad for us-
Dodd and Ritter
Bad for you-
Dorgan

wooooo!!!!

Bluementhal 2010, Lamont 2012.

[ Parent ]
And Lamont should let the chips fall
and then get out of the Governor's race and immediately announce for the 2012 Senate race.  Let's get our ducks in a row and get our Democratic candidate going for 2012 asap.

[ Parent ]
I'd rather get a stronger candidate in 2012
Lamont's campaign, while not horrible, was also not the best (read: his weird decision to take a vacation after the primary).

I'd love to see Chris Murphy run, he'd clean Lieberman's clock in a primary and make sure he'd have an impossible time running as an independent.

I like Chris Murphy
But I cant help but feel like this time it will be different for Lamont.  He'll have his shit together better and the activist base will be even more charged up for him.  Either one is fine, as long as we get  top challenger to Lieberman.

[ Parent ]
Agreed ...
I like Murphy better.  Best would be if Rosa DeLauro wanted to run statewide -- she's one of my favorite members of Congress.

Beat me to the punch! lol

Harold Ford, dude, really?
Dude, Harold Ford. Dude! Just hold a real job for five years. In your whole life, just 5 non-government years. You haven't even been out of politics for three.

Unless this is somehow Kirsten Gillibrand's brilliant secret plan to win the Democratic nomination. In which case....I'm starting to like her more and more!

I see...
So jobs are only jobs if the private sector employees you. SO teachers, you are unemployed, police officers, your lazy and need to get a job.

[ Parent ]
Oh ok
So, just because Ford was able to successfully run for office at a young age (26), he should stop working in government for five years?

Should Joe Biden resign as VP because he worked three years before being elected to the Senate. Two of those three years he served in a local office, so technically, if you want to really get accurate, he served only one year after law school working a "real job".

Please, post a diary with the email you send to his office, I think we'd all be interested in reading it.

[ Parent ]
Perhaps the "Dudes" were not sufficient....
....To indicate that the above was a joke-y reply to the situation, and not a serious analysis.

And my God, people, of course I think teacher and cop are real jobs and have nothing against people who are able to win office at a young age. Harold Ford just needs to run in Tennessee, not New York.

Gilli
Why in the world would any Democrat still be lukewarm on Kirsten?

Hopefully we can get Cuomo/Suozzi to run for Gov/Lt Gov.

29/D/Male/NY-01

You do realize
That Cuomo would never willingly run on a ticket with another Italian-American, right? I mean, the Lt. Gov. primary is separate from the Gov primary, so it could happen. Except that it won't:

"I hope to be back in politics someday," he told reporters at a presser today announcing his concession, "but I can't imagine it would be anytime soon."

[ Parent ]
I might be one of the few here...
and maybe it is for personal reasons, but I really like KG. In person, at least, (and when she was still a Congresswoman from the 20th), she had such a genuine nature and was instantly relatable, in my experience.

Putting her next to Harold Ford, of course, I think only further emphasizes these positive characteristics...

You're not alone
Gillibrand was my first choice from day 1. I wanted her, I got her, I jumped for joy in the hospital while visiting my friend as the news was announced.

Same here.
Mark my words, she could well be President someday.

Stop complaining and whining and get to work.

[ Parent ]
I think you're absolutely right about that.

[ Parent ]
Gillibrand for Prez? Really?
I'd like some meat to back up that observation, if you don't mind. (I just happen to be speaking as a New Yorker who doesn't know a single other fellow New Yorker who's the slighest bit enthused about her.)

Paul Begala seems to think so
He doesn't say it explicitly in this article http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITI...

But the implication is clear, to me.

Gillibrand is like in her early 40s? She may have opportunities to run sometime between now and 2040.

[ Parent ]
Just speculation
Six years ago, who outside of Illinois had heard of a liberal state senator with a funny sounding name from the south side of Chicago?  My point being that our nominee in 2016 very well may be someone who isn't even on the political scene right now.

As Tietack says, she's young -- and I'd add seems like she has some real political skills.  If you're right and no one in New York is "the slighest bit enthused about her," find someone to run against her.  My guess is they would lose badly.

[ Parent ]
I firmly believe Maloney would've defeated her in a primary

I suspect they would have hated Maloney upstate
I think the animus between upstate and "The City" is still strong.

[ Parent ]
Perhaps, but not necessarily...
I knew plenty of Democrats in my hometown (Albany) who were excited about the possilbility of Maloney running. Granted, I imagine Gillibrand would've played better in rural districts like her own, but Maloney had one hefty resume she could've run on.

[ Parent ]
How is Maloney better?
I hear her name mentioned here and there, but I've yet to hear anyone make the case that Maloney would be more progressive than Gillibrand.  Progressive Punch has Gillibrand ranked the 4th most progressive senator, while Maloney is ranked the 124th most progressive house member.

[ Parent ]
At the time of the Maloney buzz, Gillibrand was only known for her conservative House record

Sure, and I could point to many rural whites in Alabama
who support everything on President Obama's agenda.

Truth is, there's no telling for sure without polling. Only guesswork suggests that Maloney wanted the Senate seat - and either internal polls or perhaps President Obama himself stopped her from entering the primary.

[ Parent ]
Maloney's internals had her slightly defeating Gillibrand
Her key role as Joint Finance Committee Chairwoman seemed the central rationale toward not pursuing the bid.

If Ford gets crushed
say 75/25... that would be sadistic fun.

Nothing wrong with primarying Gillibrand, but Ford doing it ludicrous.

nothing would unite progressives behind Gillibrand more than Ford
He is an assclown rivaled only by Lieberman in terms of a craptastic combination of disengenuous and corporate.

Gillibrand may be semi-vulnerable to a primary from the left, but a primary from the right, here in New York?

The good news is that is Ford runs, he gets annihilated by double digits and unites progressives in a way nothing else really could in 2010.

[ Parent ]
Ford
Ford is such a triangulator that i could see him running a liberal campaign. But even if hes ideologically suitable for liberals i dont think theyd want someone whos such a massive and utter triangulator. But I have a feeling he wouldnt run as a liberal but rather as a moderate. Though probably much less conservative than his 2006 Senate run.

In some ways this helps Gillibrand
It forces her to run and introduce herself to voters-her biggest weakness being that no one knows her.  It also helps her solidify the base on the left.  Personally, I kind of hope Ford tries this craziness.

Stop complaining and whining and get to work.

Ford doesn't force Gillibrand to do anything......
If "no one knows her" applies to Gillibrand, then "he is literally an invisible mute" applies to Ford.

Harold Ford has name recognition only among his personal acquaintances and in the microscopic universe of political junkies like us.  It's questionable whether even in NYC's black community Ford would be accepted as an alternative to Gillibrand, since there are plenty of black pols who've cut their teeth and waited their turns for various desired promotions awhile, and Ford is NOT among them.

I think a Ford candidacy might just be WEAK enough that Gillibrand ends up not having to take him seriously.

But yeah, it might just solidify the left behind Kirsten...that's possible.

I'm just not fathoming the developments in this race...
Harold Ford seemed awfully serious about jumping in on Morning Joe this morning.

Ford running in New York seems opportunistic
As a Tennessean I supported Ford in 2006, but I in no way think he should be shopping himself around in New York. It was really disappointing to many TN Dems when he left Tennessee and seemingly abandoned any interest in TN or Memphis politics; this magnifies that disappointment. On the other hand, if he were to enter the primary, it would be a great catalyst in solidifying support around Gillibrand, as others have already mentioned.

[ Parent ]
Ford
If Ford does this he could never run for office in TN again.  Has he already stated he is done with TN politics?

[ Parent ]
Statewide yes
I can't see how in such a increasingly hard state for Democrats that he could ever come back after running in New York and convince Tennesseans he was in it to serve them. It would be a messaging nightmare. Now Memphis and Shelby County on the other hand will probably always be open and supportive of any political endeavor he would chose to undertake locally; be it City or County Mayor or a return to Congress. However, he has not shown or stated as far as I know any interest in either, and Memphis had a special election for City Mayor just last year.

[ Parent ]
Good God, Ford is a NOBODY in New York......
I hope Harold wakes up and smells reality.

He is a nobody in New York.

The comparisons to carpetbaggers Bobby Kennedy and Hillary Clinton are laughable.  Bobby and Hillary were nationwide celebrities when they ran as close family members to recent former Presidents.

Harold Ford is a no-name outside Tennessee.  Yes political junkies like us know he was a Congressman and a Congressman's son and an impressive-but-defeated Senate candidate in Tennessee and the DLC head.  But as obsessive political junkies we're not representative of anyone in the electorate, New York or elsewhere.

If Harold really wants to serve in elective office in New York, he needs to invest himself in New York politics for awhile and bide his time until some kind of office opens up.

42, male, Indian-American, Democrat, VA-10

I laughed out loud when I first read the Ford story
which necessitated me explaining to my girlfriend, who doesn't follow politics closely, "what was so funny". Ford must seriously think he has a shot at this... "Legend in his own Mind" I guess.

28, Unenrolled, MA-08

Stop the madness
OMG! If Harold Ford wants to run for something, he should move back to Tennessee and run for Governor.
