NY-20: Tedisco Gauging Support for a Rematch

by: James L.

Back in April, former GOP Assembly Minority Leader Jim Tedisco said that he wasn't planning on seeking a rematch against Democratic Rep. Scott Murphy, but today he's singing a different tune. From the Glens Falls Post-Star:

Republican James Tedisco said Thursday he has been meeting with county GOP chairmen in the 20th District to discuss a possible rematch next year against U.S. Rep. Scott Murphy, D-Glens Falls.

"I enjoy being a public servant and I'm looking at the atmosphere now," said Tedisco, a state Assemblyman from Glenville. "And it certainly has changed since when I ran for congressman in the short eight week election." [...]

Tedisco said in a telephone interview that he has been meeting with the 10 county chairmen to analyze mistakes his campaign made  in the special election and to discuss how the mood of the country may be changing.

"I think I've met or talked with all of them," he said.

Elizabeth Benjamin has a lot more; apparently, losing the open seat race and also getting booted, literally, to the back row of the GOP Assembly caucus has left Jimmy T nothing short of morose over the past several months. Eager to redeem himself, he's looking at a second chance against Murphy or a possible run for the state Senate if Republican Hugh Farley retires next year. If Tedisco passes, Benjamin also identifies John Faso, another former Assembly Minority Leader who lost to Eliot Spitzer in 2006, as a potential recruit.

If Republicans are going to nominate somebody with more grativas than a sack of potatoes, Scott Murphy couldn't complain too badly with the prospect of beating up on Tedisco again.

Meh
His campaign was an epic fail. I think its time to let someone new come in, like Sen. Betty Little to try.

A race with Little would be interesting
I read somewhere that she and Murphy were in-laws.

She'd be 70 by election day
that's a little old to be starting a career in Congress.

[ Parent ]
Is that important?
If so, why? A lot of people would argue that Congress isn't supposed to be a career for life, and that the most important title in American democracy is that of Citizen. Anyway, a healthy 70-year-old woman could quite possibly serve 5 terms or so.

I've actually started to come around on the issue of term limits
but for now, effectiveness in Congress is based on seniority.

[ Parent ]
OK, I get that argument
though I don't find it a very strong one. When people elect a representative to a first term, very few of them are thinking about seniority.

By the way, I think term limits are undemocratic and bad and don't support them for any office, including President.

Remember Steele on this race (he couldn't even pronounce Gillibrand)

Tedisco in 2009
What did Tedisco's campaign do wrong?  I seem to remember his most publicized mistake was waiting a very long time to give his position on the stimulus bill.  People seemed to think that his campaign wasn't run well.  How much of his loss was due to the Democratic Party doing well nationally at the time of the election?

Washington
He let too many NRCC people work on his campaign and run alot of it. They especially screwed up on the attack ads, they were using such minor things. When he realized what was going on and took over his campaign again, it was too late

Seriously
They were bashing Murphy for being a business man? I thought small business and unrestricted capitalism was a tenant of the GOP. Though, Tedisco has nothing to lose, he was forced out of his leadership position during the recount.

Why was he forced out?
That's seemed kind of like crap based off that simple of a sentence.

He resigned (although he was going to be removed otherwise)
Before the election, if I recall correctly.  Not during the recount.

It's a truly 50/50 district
at present with a slow Democratic trend.  The more adept and better organized candidate was going to win the special election.

Tedisco and his people (and the national GOP) assumed it to be a district with a Republican lean that Gillibrand somehow overcame and Murphy couldn't.  So they were sloppy, clumsy, loud, and figured the mistakes they made didn't really matter.

[ Parent ]
This sounds like a pretty good explanation
This whole, it's a GOP district was what everyone said, is what was handicapped against it but in the end, Obama won the district by 3% and Bush only carried it by 8% and 7% in 2004 and 2000 respectively.

The district clearly trended our way since 2004, Gillibrand won in 2006 by a solid margin and again in 2008 by a solid margin (and had the seat for life) and then Obama won it.  Me thinks it being a lean Republican seat was a pretty inaccurate mentality.  Traditional Republican seat, sure, now it's a swing district.

Also
Party leaders selected Tedisco over other local GOPers that had support among the grassroots.  A lot of local activists resented that and wouldn't organize for Tedisco.

Stimulus Avoidance
"What did Tedisco's campaign do wrong? I seem to remember his most publicized mistake was waiting a very long time to give his position on the stimulus bill."

That's what I've heard. He went weeks saying that he wouldn't say how he would have voted on it, and Murphy pounded him on his refusal to give an answer. And the gap between them closed about 4-5% every week.

"How much of his loss was due to the Democratic Party doing well nationally at the time of the election?"

Good question. I can tell you that Murphy is a terrific candidate: smart, personable, charismatic. But I think much of this election rides with the national mood. If the economy isn't trending up next fall, it's going to be tough for any Democrat in a swing district no matter how good the candidate is.

Zombie carpetbagger! Aaaaaaah!
I hope he gets it. Then Murphy will have a shot even if everything goes horribly wrong for us in every other marginal district. He's just the sort of Albany scumbucket that the rest of New York loves to hate.

To be honest, I still think NY-24 has a better chance of flipping, though I'm not crying too hard about the prospect of losing Arcuri, and that seat can always be eliminated in redistricting.
