IL-Sen: Burris Won't Seek Full Term in 2010

So says the Chicago Sun-Times:

Sneed has learned U.S. Sen. Roland Burris has decided NOT to seek election to the seat he fought the government to keep.

Sen. Burris is planning to announce his decision Friday by issuing a statement to the press. But he's reportedly not planning to field any questions from the press.

The decision by Burris was based on his inability to raise campaign funds; campaign disclosures with the Federal Election Commission are expected to be filed next week...and he has reportedly only raised approximately $20,000

Presumably Burris is also seeking an early exit in order to spend more time with his mausoleum.

I never felt that Burris would have a prayer of winning the primary
But it's good to know that there's no chance that we'll have to worry about the possibility of having to defend Burris...

Nice relief
Now the election can go on without the meaning sideshow.

Bad news for Kirk.  He need the Dem primary to be something of a circus.

meaning = meaningless

I think the announcements in quick succession are probably linked

This seat is safe now
kirk or no kirk

Kirk would be better off going for Governor IMO n/t

50, straight white male, Democrat(Dan Boren/Gene Taylor 2012!), AL-7(born in AL-5)

[ Parent ]
Why?
Pat Quinn's reasonably popular and he's an incumbent. The open Senate seat's a better bet for him.

Cause Democrats have just been a debacle in State
People might be willing to keep voting for Democrat for federal office - but wanting Republicans as Governor as "check."

IDK. As an Illinois resident I for one think that Republicans are dead in the water for any statewide office. I don't think that Kirk has a chance against Giannoulias.

[ Parent ]
True, but
as you said, the IL GOP has been decimated at the state level in IL. Aside from Kirk, they really don't have anyone who would be viable statewide.

[ Parent ]
who gave him $20000 ?
Seriously, who decided in this economy, the best thing they could do with a thousand dollars is give it to Burris?

26, male, Dem, NJ-12

Republicans
Maybe Kirk gave him some money...

IL
I always believed Burris would not run.He was doomed to
lose the primary.Kirk needed Burris In order to win.

Don't be surprised to see Obama support Chris Kennedy If he runs.

why would he do that?
Just another legacy candidate with no elective experience and completely undeserving.

Besides Alex Gialonilius is the State Treasurer and a close friend and ally of Obama.

Call no man happy until he is dead-Aeschylus

[ Parent ]
And:
About time. This move by Burris basically ensures that Alexi G. will easily win the Senate seat - Kirk doesn't stand a chance in blazes.

[ Parent ]
Not So Sure About That
I think Alexi could benefit from a spirited primary challenge. Not that Burris was going to give him that, but someone oughtta...

[ Parent ]
Um why?
Giannoulias and Obama are pretty tight. If he is going to endorse anyone it'd be him.

[ Parent ]
Perhaps Madigan got out because of this
knowing that Obama would be implicitly, if not explicitly, supporting Alexi.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

[ Parent ]
It was probably partially that
everyone is friends with Barack and everyone wants to count on him.  I bet Madigan figured, well, Alexi is in the Senate race and really rocking it out, he's young and can do a lot for Illinois for a long time, might as well just wait it out and everyone wins, I'll have my turn at Governor.  (I dont mean turn in a negative sense, I really like her and cant wait to see her be Gov, she's earned it and is really popular for good reason.)

[ Parent ]
My opinion I don't think he's going to endorse anyone
And I don't think he should. Now that Burris is out of the way let who ever want's to run and see what happens. The primary is in February, plenty of time to kiss and make up. I know that Obama is close to Ted and Caroline kennedy, and he's probably greatfull for all their support. I don't really know if he knows Chris Kennedy all that well.On the other hand it does not really seem like the White House is all that crazy about Giannoulous for the Senate. They really did seem to have their heart set on Madigan. By the way what does anyone think of Jackson. Do you think she could be a spoiler in the race? I mean she's a woman and African American (obviously a very important constituancy in Illinois).

[ Parent ]
Good question re Cheryle Jackson
I think she could be a spoiler in this race. As of now, she is the only African American (and the only woman) in the race, so that could boost her profile.

Unless someone else jumps in, I see the three main primary candidates on our side being Giannoulias, Kennedy, and Jackson.

[ Parent ]
Good
now people on this blog can stop pretending he could make it through a primary or garner even more than 5% in it.  Whenever IL-Senate came up, I was always surprised people even factored Burris into that equation.

Glory Halleluyah!
I hope it was worth it to him to buy the office.

He got what he wanted out of it
To be able to chip "US Senator" into his crypt.

What an asshole!

[ Parent ]
Kirk is the Mark Kennedy of this year
he is going to get demolished, badly.  But that won't stop pundits from constantly talking him up and acting like he has a chance.

Or
The John N. Kennedy of 2010.

[ Parent ]
Who?
I'm not familiar with this comparison. Could you clarify please?

[ Parent ]
John N. Kennedy is the Democratic-turned-Republican state treasurer from Louisiana.
He was hyped as the candidate to take down Mary Landrieu, and he ended up losing by 6 points.

Okay, that last stinger was a bit too harsh, IMO.
Because of the implications.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

Excellent!
Given his abysmal fundrasing numbers, I'm not surprised Burris is dropping out. I wonder if this means our primary will become even more crowded, now that the risk of Burris winning is gone.

Any guesses on who else will jump in?

BTW, what's with all these references to a mausoleum?

Yikes
I've heard of people erecting monuments of their own arrogance/insanity, but that is ridiculous!
