SD-Gov/AL: Herseth Sandlin Will Seek Re-Election

Strike another name off the open seat watch:

Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-S.D.) is running for re-election to her House seat, passing up an opportunity to run for governor of South Dakota.

"I wanted you to be among the first to know that today I am announcing my intention to run for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010," Herseth Sandlin said in an e-mail to supporters.

"I strongly believe I can best serve the state by building on the work I've undertaken over the last five years in Congress, including effective implementation of the new Farm Bill and Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, promoting biofuels and wind energy within a comprehensive national energy strategy, and advancing key priorities for South Dakota's economy."

As you may know, Republican Gov. Mike Rounds is term-limited next year, so Herseth Sandlin would have been in a good position to take over the statehouse. Of course, had she run for higher office, her R+9 at-large seat would have been heavily favored to turn red. So while our chances of winning the governor's mansion are probably pretty limited now, SD-AL is one House seat we won't have to worry about.

Erm... post title should be SD-Gov/AL, not ND-Gov/AL

Smart move
She can stay in the House until Tim Johnson retires and then easily hold his seat. She's certainly young enough to wait.

Right:
Good point. Hopefully, Tim Johnson will retire from the Senate in 2014 and Herseth Sandlin can then run for the seat. At that point, she'd only be 43 years old - same age as the Senate's current youngest member, Kirsten Gillibrand.

On a side note, I hope she (Gillibrand) can send Maloney packing in the NY primary.

oy
as a usd student i was hoping she'd run so there'd be a chance for at least a little balance in sd's govt.  republican legs, republican govt, i mean for god's sake the water in aberdeen has chunks in it!  govt isn't small enough to drown here, it already did!  in water you could chew!

Top ten signs you're an SSPer #1: your favorite song is "Panic At Tedisco" and no one understands what you mean.

What about Scott Heidepriem?
He seems to be the likely candidate with Herseth out. Does he have any shot at it?

Dakotas
Both North and South Dakota are enigmas. Fact is Dems have very little chance on the state level where Democrats have more success on the congressional level. North Dakota's entire congressional delegation has been all democrats since the 90's and South Dakota's was all democratic through 2004. Until John Thune sent Daschle packing. The Dakotas are moving our way though, Obama only lost North and South Dakota by 8 points. If Obama hadn't withdrawn from North Dakota after the RNC convention, he could of won the state.

Not quite true for SD.
The House seat was Republican from 97-04.  In fact, I wonder if losing the House seat was extra incentive to boot Daschle, so there was some Republican representation on the federal level.

In fact,
Rep. Sandlin's win in 2004 gave SD it's first all Democratic federal delegation since 1937 according to wikipedia.

Wow
That sounds...extraordinarily frightening.

john thune
I wish she would challenge Thune. She might have a chance at beating that awful senator.

No chance
That would be career suicide.

Speaking of Thune
There was a customer at work, a couple weeks ago, wearing a Thune for Congress 1996 shirt (or maybe '98, I dont remember). And this is faaar, faaar from South Dakota LOL. He is a recent transplant here. Not to often you see a shirt like that. I told him I know alot about Thune, since Im very into politics, and he seemed quite surprised. Maybe because he knows most Texans dont even know our own Senator. Besides their name, of course.

Great news
Better national profile, better for taking one or the other Senate seat someday.
