IA-05: King calls Obama "socialist," pushes fake ACORN fraud

Last weekend my fellow Iowa blogger 2laneIA published a comprehensive diary on Congressman Steve King's "greatest hits." Click the link to read about King's suggestion that we electrify the border fence with Mexico like we do "with livestock," his prediction that terrorists will be "dancing in the streets" if Obama becomes president, and his pride in working to scale back funding for the State Children's Health Insurance Program (which he calls Socialist Clinton-style Hillarycare for Illegals and their Parents). I mentioned a few more low points for King in this post.

Yesterday the man Ann Coulter calls "one of my favorites" helped warm up the crowd at a Sarah Palin rally in Sioux City.

desmoinesdem :: IA-05: King calls Obama "socialist," pushes fake ACORN fraud
According to Iowa Independent, King suggested that electing Obama could be a step toward totalitarian rule:

"When you take a lurch to the left you end up in a totalitarian dictatorship," King said.  "There is no freedom to the left. It's always to our side of the aisle."

Sioux City Journal political correspondent Bret Hayworth wrote on his liveblog,

10:12 a.m.: King gives the first of what will be two speaking opportunities, this one the longer, for nine minutes. He lays out several versions of the words "liberal" and "socialist" in describing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. He mentions the ACORN group and earns a big "Booooo." King said a Google search of "Acorn Fraud" gets you 2 million hits of possible stories.

King said it's not a stretch to link Obama to the ACORN group, since he worked for them in voting matters. "Obama is ACORN... When I see Obama, I see ACORN branded on his forehead," King said.

King has embarrassed Iowans with his bigotry and extremism for too long.

If he is re-elected, he won't just be an irritant for Iowans. King severely disrupted the House Judiciary Committee's efforts to question Douglas Feith in July, and I'm sure there will be more where that came from in the new Congress.

Iowa's fifth is an R+8 district, but Rob Hubler has a real shot in this race, for reasons I discussed here.

Send a message to Steve King by donating to Hubler for Congress.

Question
Is there a worse member of Congress than Steve King?  There are certainly a lot of really bad ones, but having watched most of these guys, I think Steven King might be the absolute worst.  The guy is bigoted, nasty, and really, he's plain stupid.  We have more conservative districts which makes me think the right candidate could help us one day oust this clown.

he is certainly among the very worst
In fact, Texas Nate wrote a diary this summer calling King the worst of the worst, and Texas has some really bad ones.

I think this year is the best chance we'll have to oust King. Republicans know McCain is going to lose Iowa, and he was never the favorite of the western Iowa wingnuts. Obama has a huge turnout machine, but the Iowa GOP doesn't have nearly as much going. Their candidate against Harkin is a joke. King is not really taking Hubler's challenge seriously.

I am hoping that enough Republicans stay home to let Hubler sneak through with a strong Democratic turnout and a big edge among independents.

Tom Harkin was first elected to Congress from conservative SW Iowa in the post-Watergate landslide of 1974.

I've heard him on the radio
He spend most of his time bashing immigrants.  He sounds nearly as bad as poeple like Tancredo on the issue.

I was surprised he didn't endorse Tancredo
but maybe by the time King endorsed Tancredo had already backed Romney, I can't remember.

King had the supremely good judgment to endorse Fred Thompson for president.

speaking of Tancredo
big applause line from his stump speeches in Iowa last year was something like, "I'm tired of hearing, 'Press one for English, press two for Spanish.'"

Republicans have used that in campaign ads
I've seen that used quite a few times in TV ads around the country.  It's just a very lame attempt at race baiting.  I believe a Florida politician tried using it in his race in 2006 and lost because it ticked off Hispanics.

Looks like the Dolchstoßlegende plan is gaining steam
Go ahead Republicans, convince yourselves that your massive defeat was a result of fraud.  Don't change anything about your party. In fact, purge moderates and anyone who suggests that you may need to reform.  The should bring back into the majority real quickly, say maybe, 2036?

Steve King is confused.
He thinks he is running against Obama. In meetings in his district he spends his time bashing Obama rather than talking about the issues that affect people in the district. He never talks about Rob Hubler and refused to debate Hubler. However, he did offer to debate Obama.

King used the same line, "When I see Obama, I see ACORN branded on his forehead," in Spencer (IA) one week ago. He must think it's clever.

Thanks, desmoinesdem.

someone at Daily Kos
suggested this comment may be a dog whistle for people who think blacks carry the mark of Cain on their faces.

I have not heard of King saying anything about Rob Hubler. He seems content to pretend he has no challenger. He has also refused all invitations to debate.
